It has been speculated by some Broncos faithful that former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was far more interested in beating the Oakland Raiders than in how the team did during the rest of any given season. It would be an understatement of monstrous proportions to say that there was bad blood between Shanahan and former Raiders owner Al Davis. In Shanahan's first four years as the Broncos head coach, he posted a 7-1 record against the Raiders. After Elway's retirement, he continued to pump the Broncos up to play Oakland and built up a 14-6 record for an overall record of 21-7 versus the Raiders. In his fourteen seasons as Denver's head coach, Shanahan swept the Raiders eight times and was only swept by them once. By way of comparison, the Shanahan Broncos went 14-14-0 versus Kansas City and 17-11 versus the Chargers . On Tuesday, B/R's D.J. Siddiqi broke down the Denver Broncos running back situation . Today, we'll look at the cornerback competition. Going into the training camp, the team is currently carrying eight cornerbacks ranging from 14-year veterans to undrafted rookies. Below, we take a look at those defensive backs. Locks Champ Bailey Bailey was ranked as the 10th-best cornerback by ProFootballFocus .com (subscription required for the link), earning a 12.0 grade from PFF . Bailey earned an 8.7 coverage grade and a 3.7 grade against the run. Although he has slowed down to some extent, Bailey is the most experienced cornerback on the team's roster. He has lost his title as the most talented cornerback on the roster to the young defender listed below, but he is still the smartest and most important corner in Denver. Chris Harris Jr. Harris was ranked fifth overall among cornerbacks by PFF in 2012, earning an 18.4 overall grade. With a 10.5 coverage rating and a 7.7 grade against the run, Harris was by far the best cornerback on Denver's roster last season. Going forward, Harris figures to see time both across from Bailey and covering the slot in nickel and dime packages. The Denver Broncos have strict media regulations when it comes to photography of their practice sessions, especially in regard to formations and player personnel. But when it comes to photos released by the team—photos that can be accessed by every other team in the NFL —it’s a different story. On Tuesday, the Broncos uploaded the photo seen at the top of this article as the cover photo of their Facebook page ( Update : the photo was removed shortly after this article was published). Nothing to see here, right? The photo actually reveals a lot. The offense is lined up in a pistol formation, with what appears to be Ronnie Hillman lined up behind quarterback Peyton Manning in the backfield, receivers Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas on the outside and Wes Welker lined up in the slot. To put it simply, the quarterback lines up four yards behind the center in the pistol offense with the running back lined up three yards behind him (as opposed to both being lined up next to each other seven yards behind the line of scrimmage in a traditional shotgun formation). The rest of the NFL is doing it, so it's time the Denver Broncos caught on. After all, it's a copycat league, right? The trend? Running back committees. In order to keep feature backs viable for as long as possible during their already short careers and show the defense a change of pace, clubs are frequently using two and sometimes three running backs. (Teams are simply not running the ball as much as they did in the past anyway.) Peyton Manning 's pass-happy Broncos—who boast one of the best and most diverse receiving corps in football which now includes run-game stand-in Wes Welker —has to evolve to a more collegiate-esque running back committee. They distinctly did not implement a running back committee in 2012, until they had to. Before Willis McGahee was hurt on November 18 against the San Diego Chargers , he was averaging 17.7 carries per game. Meanwhile, Ronnie Hillman was averaging 5.2 carries, Lance Ball was averaging 2.1 carries and Knowshon Moreno had eight total carries. McGahee's injury forced the Broncos to implement a makeshift running back committee that featured Moreno and was supplemented by Hillman and Ball. After the Week 11 game in which McGahee was lost for the remainder of the regular season, the newly formed Denver running trio averaged 3.91 yards per carry, which was a respectable yet unspectacular figure.
