The Lib Dems should be wary of becoming the dull middle men of British politics

Source: www.newstatesman.com --- Thursday, May 23, 2013
While Clegg's party looks increasingly conformist, the Tories are moving into a coherent right-wing position for 2015. If anyone thought the best way to herd Tory backbenchers back into line was a stiff telling off from Nick Clegg , then they were always destined to be disappointed. But I don’t suppose that was ever the real intention. It was probably more about two other things – ensuring the junior member of the coalition looked more adult (and more disciplined) than the senior side – and winding Tory MPs up to such an extent they go off on one and make a bit of a show of themselves. Again. The latter hope seemed doomed to failure – surely Nick of all people waving the red rag at those Conservative backbench bulls was just too obvious a strategy, and they wouldn’t fall for it. But no, I’m wrong. John Redwood has manfully stepped up to the plate, pawing the ground, snorting with fury – and blaming all the woes of the world on the Lib Dems - all this time wasted on boundary revisions, House of Lords reform, the AV referendum - our fault apparently. Seeing as the political shenanigans of the last fortnight have been Tory-inspired (Euro referendums and splits on equal marriage), this seems a bit rich. But it also points to something else. That the Conservative backbenches remain fiercely unhappy with being in coalition and resent Lib Dem-inspired policy just as much as they resent not getting their own way on what they view as cor ...

Source: www.coachisright.com --- Thursday, May 23, 2013
By Derrick Hollenbeck, staff writer The number of scandals and the speed at which they are both multiplying and growing in seriousness portends difficulties for Democrats in the near future. Nevertheless, they are a slippery bunch and never without a trick or two up their sleeve. All indications are that these scandals will end Democrat dreams of having useful idiots like Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan help them erase our borders thus giving them a fresh supply of voters. When that scheme ends, they will have to look elsewhere and that elsewhere is Statehood for Puerto Rico. A movement for statehood for Puerto Rico is perfect trap for feckless Republicans who, after defeating Rubio – Schumer amnesty bill, will be looking for a way to apologize to Hispanics. There is no doubt that Chuck Schumer and Bob Menendez will take weak-kneed Republicans by the hand and lead them to the “redemption” they can receive through voting for Puerto Rico’s Statehood. Clouds of “burnt sulfur” will fill the halls of Congress blinding Republicans to the fact that making Puerto Rico a state will provide Democrats will a permanent addition of four House and two Senate seats with no chance of ever changing those numbers. Ask the lone Republican legislator in Hawaii about this. Right now the federal government hands a yearly total of $ 2 billion to Puerto Rico in food stamp grants with approximately $500,000 of it in totally untraceable c-a-s-h! While less than ...

Get this: Max Baucus, who (among other Dems) originally called for IRS scrutiny of Tea Party groups, is now investigating how the IRS could've done such a thing. Curioser and curiouser. Are these Democrats deserving of even a scintilla of respect? They deserve the same level of reverence that they give us. Here's the story, in brief, courtesy of US News: "Over the last three years, Democratic senators repeatedly and publicly pressured the IRS to engage in the very activities that they are only now condemning today.... "The same Democratic chairman of the Senate Finance Committee who this week is calling for hearings into IRS activities, specifically called on the IRS to engage in that very conduct back in 2010. And he wasn't the only one. Just last year, a group of seven Senate Democrats sent another letter to the IRS urging them to similarly investigate these outside political organizations." No, you have not fallen into a rabbit hole. This is simply the modus operandi of "our friends across the aisle." http://tinyurl.com/d7nzuhj No, they are not our friends, not America's friends. They are conducting a bloodless civil war to utterly and forever change America In ways most Americans would abhor. They attacked the Tea Party for not cheerfully going along. ...
