While Clegg's party looks increasingly conformist, the Tories are moving into a coherent right-wing position for 2015. If anyone thought the best way to herd Tory backbenchers back into line was a stiff telling off from Nick Clegg , then they were always destined to be disappointed. But I don’t suppose that was ever the real intention. It was probably more about two other things – ensuring the junior member of the coalition looked more adult (and more disciplined) than the senior side – and winding Tory MPs up to such an extent they go off on one and make a bit of a show of themselves. Again. The latter hope seemed doomed to failure – surely Nick of all people waving the red rag at those Conservative backbench bulls was just too obvious a strategy, and they wouldn’t fall for it. But no, I’m wrong. John Redwood has manfully stepped up to the plate, pawing the ground, snorting with fury – and blaming all the woes of the world on the Lib Dems - all this time wasted on boundary revisions, House of Lords reform, the AV referendum - our fault apparently. Seeing as the political shenanigans of the last fortnight have been Tory-inspired (Euro referendums and splits on equal marriage), this seems a bit rich. But it also points to something else. Nevertheless, they are a slippery bunch and never without a trick or two up their sleeve. All indications are that these scandals will end Democrat dreams of having useful idiots like Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan help them erase our borders thus giving them a fresh supply of voters. When that scheme ends, they will have to look elsewhere and that elsewhere is Statehood for Puerto Rico. A movement for statehood for Puerto Rico is perfect trap for feckless Republicans who, after defeating Rubio – Schumer amnesty bill, will be looking for a way to apologize to Hispanics. There is no doubt that Chuck Schumer and Bob Menendez will take weak-kneed Republicans by the hand and lead them to the “redemption” they can receive through voting for Puerto Rico’s Statehood. Clouds of “burnt sulfur” will fill the halls of Congress blinding Republicans to the fact that making Puerto Rico a state will provide Democrats will a permanent addition of four House and two Senate seats with no chance of ever changing those numbers. After the lame performance of Democrats in the immigration reform markup, I would say Fugelsang is being generous. Republicans are incredibly skilled at holding no actual power but nonetheless making wildly effective threats. What has Kohn so upset? That committee Democrats shelved Sen. Pat Leahy's amendment granting same-sex couples the same rights as everyone else when granting immigration visas, while agreeing to another amendment by Sen. Orrin Hatch to make it easier for U.S. companies to import workers from abroad. The first is disappointing because Democrats should fight for equality, the latter because it makes it easier for companies to keep wages down by ostensibly importing lower-cost immigrant workers.
