Source: www.momsrising.org --- Thursday, May 16, 2013
Last weekend, I attended my first ever state Convention of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. My first few weeks in local party leadership have been packed with epiphanies. Unfortunately, these did not include remembering to stash the all-important box of feminine hygiene products in my suitcase before I hit the highway. It’s a five hour drive from Española to Las Cruces, and I was rushing, not wanting to miss the opening reception where I would meet politically connected Democrats from around the state. I stopped somewhere south of Socorro for gas and noticed a Walgreens. I looked at my watch. If I drove quickly, I would just make it. I decided to forgo Walgreens, reasoning that in a room full of at least 350 women, I’d be able to scrounge a few corks from someone. WRONG! I entered the basketball arena where the Convention was being held and quickly signed in. Having dispatched with the necessities, I was free to engage in a hunt for feminine hygiene products. I moseyed on over to the bathroom. I figured I’d probably find a dispenser selling individually wrapped joy sticks for seventy-five thousand cents apiece. WRONG! I was in the ladies room at the Aggies’ basketball arena. No amenities and no genital gouging, even at inflated prices. I trotted out and snared a friend from Santa Fe. “Hi!” I greeted her before asking discretely, “You don’t have a tampon in your purse, do you?” She hooted with laughter. “Honey, I stopped need ...

Source: blogs.venturacountystar.com --- Wednesday, April 17, 2013
(Apologies for the fact this is being posted three days after the Convention ended. It's been a busy couple days over at the Statehouse...) KEEP YOUR EYES ON DARAKA -- One of the biggest internal events at the weekend Convention was the election of a new state party secretary, and Santa Barbara's Daraka Larimore-Hall came away with the big prize. He defeated an opponent who had several things going for her (such as being a "her"), She was endorsed by Attorney General Kamala Harris and was introduced to delegates before her speech on the Convention floor by Christine Pelosi , daughter of House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi . Assemblyman Das Williams , who supported Larimore-Hall's candidacy and is a longtime ally, said the victory was the result of a lot of legwork on the part of the young chairman of the Santa Barbara County Democratic Central Committee. Larimore-Hall's enthusiasm was plainly on display during his speech to delegrates. Near the end of a very energetic speech, he talked of "kicking a--." The remark caused even state party Chairman John Burton , whose public use of salty language is legendary, to fidget nervously behind Larimore-Hall on the Convention stage. In any event, voters along the Central Coast should keep their eyes on Daraka. The election to a statewide party office makes him a potential contender for the Legislature once Williams is termed out in 2016. PRESSURE ON FRACKING -- Sen. Fran Pavley acknowledg ...

This year the Convention takes place close to home in Sacramento and the weather is supposed to be great. That just means I may spend more time outside than inside the dark Convention hall. After the Convention I will be posting images to Flickr , and will announce the exact location in a post next week. This will be, I don’t know, my tenth Convention. Between the twice yearly executive board meetings and annual conventions I’ve lost count. They don’t hold much political excitement for me. Most everything is already decided and the business and votes are just a formality. The rest is predictable speeches serving red meat to party faithful and beating each other up in committee meetings. And it is the same on the Republican side. For me the Convention is all about the photo ops. That and witnessing the insanity that is political partisanship. This year, for the first time, I will have two cameras, plus my iPhone. What didn’t happen this year is a press pass. I requested one, but never heard back. It’s a little disappointing since I have always been able to get one in the past. Not surprising though, considering that I have distanced myself from the party. I’m not big on Kool-Aide.
