Kicking off (pun intended) Day 3 of his soccer ambassador visit to China, David Beckham showed up at Shanghai Shenxin FC in Shanghai this morning (June 19). Donning a dapper suit and big smile, the English hunk shook hands with local leaders and posed for plenty of photo opportunities as fans and press looked on. Meanwhile, it seems David’s massive donation to a children’s charity in Paris is finally sorted out- Becks pledged to donate his salary from Paris Saint-Germain to Necker Children’s Hospital He explained, “It’s something I’m not sure has been done before, and it’s something I’m very passionate about, children and the charity side of things, and so are the club.” ...

Welcome to the OFFICIAL David Beckham Sina Page! Talk to you soon!” was the Englishman’s first post on Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter. In just one day he garnered over 400,000 followers. The recently retired and international soccer star arrived in Beijing on Monday in his role as the country’s first ever soccer ambassador. It is part of of an attempt to revive the game’s image abroad amid several game-fixing scandals. His visit coincides with China’s confrontation with its own soccer scandals. Although he received a warm welcome from Chinese fans, not even Beckham’s arrival could lift the spirits of soccer fans here after the country suffered a humiliating defeat late last week. China, which is ranked 47 places ahead of Thailand by FIFA, lost 5-1 when the two countries met. While the defeat was enough to spur heated debate among sports commentators, the fact that Thailand was fielding seven players from their under-21 squad provoked more than the usual share of anger amongst soccer enthusiasts. Will NFL fans ever see David Beckham bending kicks between the uprights? According to the U.K. Daily Mirror , he almost got a chance. The international soccer icon was reportedly contacted by a scout from an NFL before he joined Paris Saint Germain in January to see if he was interested in auditioning as a kicker. Although the report does not state which NFL franchise contacted the soccer superstar, there is no doubt about the massive publicity that such a potential tryout would have produced. Chris Wesseling of NFL.com wrote that trying out Beckham "only would make sense from a publicity standpoint." With kickers being signed and cut during each offseason, NFL teams seem to be looking everywhere for viable options -- and, perhaps, extra headlines. In April, the Detroit Lions signed Norwegian kicker Havard Rugland , who garnered fame with a trick shot vide on YouTube. Certainly, these free kicks by Beckham are more impressive. Retired superstar midfielder David Beckham reportedly had a chance to play a different kind of football—as a kicker in the United States' National Football League—during his time with the MLS' Los Angeles Galaxy. Chris Bucktin of The Mirror reported that an NFL scout contacted Beckham about a possible kicker tryout while he was weighing options about his future as a footballer. Beckham ultimately decided to wrap up his storied career with Paris Saint-Germain. The skills in Beckham's arsenal would have translated rather well to the gridiron, as he had a thunderous strike and was able to bend the ball effectively. That would allow him to kick without much issue from either hash mark on an NFL field. Back in 2007, Beckham participated in an advertising campaign for Adidas with former New Orleans Saints and current Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush. In it, the two ran through various exercises with a "Futbol Meets Football" theme, and Beckham proved plenty capable of both punting and kicking an American football with fantastic power. A source of Bucktin's in Hollywood noted that a couple of scouts were actually interested in giving Beckham a shot, but that only one made an official call to him. It's known that Beckham came to the Galaxy in 2007 in an effort to raise the profile of his sport in America, and the NFL scout who had Beckham in mind knew the type of star power Beckham possessed.
