ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a Southern California man has died after being crushed by cows at a Dairy Farm in Ontario. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s office says in a statement Sunday that 28-year-old Winston Perez died in a hospital after undergoing surgery for severe internal injuries. The Riverside man was moving the cows into a paddock Saturday morning when he was crushed between a gate and the fence by the animals. Nelson Reeves was the last Dairy farmer in Arlington County. His estate, known as Reevesland, is now owned by the county government, which purchased the property more than a decade ago. Since then, very little has happened. "I feel like the county has forgotten us," says Judy Norton, who lives in the Bluemont neighborhood near Reevesland. "If they were really interested in taking care of the house, they would have taken some action by now." But now that the county has owned the property for a decade, the urban agriculture task force is finally presenting the county board with a recommendation to transform the house into a learning center. Neighborhood resident Joan Horwitt has already created a nonprofit organization to lead the charge. "Michelle Obama is not doing this," he says. "Alice Waters, who is famous for her edible schoolyard, is not doing this, because it is about civic engagement, about involving our neighbors." Third graders from Ashlawn Elementary School are already here, harvesting lettuce from a garden were Nelson Reeves once grew vegetables. "It was fun to come out here and not have to go to the store to get them, because one, it's a waste of time, and two, it's boring to sit in the car a while," says Grace Gent, who is in third grade. Troyer is no stranger to recognition for his accomplishments in the Dairy industry as he has ranked among the top herds in Wayne County for production and high cows, as well as low somatic cell counts over the past several years. This year, Troyer added a new award to the list, as the recipient of the Wayne County Dairy Service Unit’s Outstanding Herd Management Award for 2013. “Matt Kauffman suggested we try something different,” said Tom Stocksdale, a member of the Dairy Service Unit Board. “This is a new challenge for our Dairy producers.” Josh Kepler, also a member of the Dairy Service Unit Board, said when producers do everything right, they should be recognized. Award details Kauffman said the Outstanding Herd Management Award was based on production and reproduction. A Lake Independence Dairy Farm operation and the Lake Independence Citizens Association (LICA) have settled out of court a lawsuit concerning manure management and its effects on water quality in the lake. The settlement followed a court ordered mediation session that took place April 2. Attorneys for both sides have declined to comment until after release of a joint statement. LICA has been the plaintiff in the lawsuit filed against Paul J. Merz, James Merz, Paul J. Merz Trustee and Merz Farms Family LLLP. The Merz family has been operating a Dairy Farm located on the west side of Lake Independence at 2919 Lake Independence Road in Independence. The lawsuit was settled without either party admitting claims and contentions of the other party. Terms of the settlement will result in major changes in Merz Farm operations. The family agreed to end its Dairy operation involving 135 cows by Dec. 31, 2013 and to convert to a smaller beef cattle operation involving 60 “animal units.” An improved manure management plan is part of the agreement. The plan calls for placing a maximum of 45 animal units on the feedlot during the summer with the remaining cattle placed on pasture. Manure on the feedlot must be sheltered from precipitation. The agreement limits winter application of manure to land and also locations on the Farm where manure can be applied to land.
