Analysis: The Di Luca dilemma and walking the tightrope between cycling’s past, present, and future

Source: velonews.competitor.com --- Friday, May 24, 2013
<img src="http://velonews.competitor.com/files/2013/05/000_DV517007-120x120.jpg" & width="120" & height="120" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Danilo Di Luca's EPO positive shines light on the sport's anti-doping efforts and the difficulty of some older riders to move on from the past. Photo: Damien Meyer | AFP BOLZANO, Italy (VN) — Danilo Di Luca’s EPO case at the Giro d’Italia was like a kick to a dormant wasps’ nest on Friday. What once was an idyllic, if freezing cold, surprise rest day in the Dolomites turned into chaos. Reactions on Friday to the announcement that “The Killer” had failed an out-of-competition test in late April ranged from anger to indifference to calamity. There were plenty of hair-pulling “Chicken Littles” claiming the Di Luca case is yet one more affirmation that Cycling is simply a lost cause. But is Di Luca the norm or the exception? That is the million-dollar question as Cycling lurches awkwardly toward a cleaner, more credible future. In the not-so-distant past, Di Luca’s legacy was the norm. As Lance Armstrong put it so mildly to Oprah Winfrey in his made-for-TV confession in January, doping was as casual as putting air in the tires. Yet there is real evidence that Cycling has turned the corner on doping, and that Di Luca is a relic, not the baseline. There is no sport with as many skeletons in its closet as Cycling. Many of the sport’s darkest tombs have already been exhumed, but Di Luca’s case reveals there are still a few ghosts of doping’s past pedaling through the peloton. The sport remains divided and dangerously indifferent on how t ...

Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- Friday, May 24, 2013
ROME -- Cycling's first major race since the end of the Lance Armstrong case was rattled by another high-profile positive doping test Friday. Former Giro d'Italia winner Danilo Di Luca tested positive for EPO in a surprise check at his home before this year's race, organizers said. If confirmed in a backup "B" sample, Di Luca risks a lifetime ban since this is his third offense. "I wasn't expecting this. It was a surprise for me. I'm disappointed," Di Luca said upon leaving his team's hotel in northern Italy. "I'll ask for the backup analysis, then we can talk again." Armstrong appeared surprised, too. "Knowing I have 0 cred on the doping issue - I still can't help but think, `really Di Luca? Are you that ... stupid??" Armstrong tweeted, adding an expletive. It's the second doping case from this year's Giro, after French rider Sylvain Georges tested positive for the banned stimulant Heptaminol in a urine sample after the seventh stage. The 28-year-old AG2R La Mondiale rider was immediately withdrawn from the race. The UCI provisionally suspended Di Luca pending a hearing with the Italian Cycling federation and the Vini Fantini-Selle Italia team fired the 37-year-old Italian rider. "Danilo has betrayed Cycling once again," Giro race director Mauro Vegni said. "But I'm happy it wasn't a young rider. Danilo belongs to a generation that has navigated through the doping system." After being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, ...

As the person responsible for applying science to how the team’s riders race and train, the ability to collect, view, and analyze rider power output data both in time frames as short as a 30-minute time trial and as long as over years of racing, helps him ground his subjective evaluations of rider fitness. At this year’s Giro d’Italia, Ketchell said he uses Garmin Connect every day to “Look at all the analytics for the stage. We look at different riders, how much energy they are spending per stage, the total amount of calories that they expend, how efficient they are, and how it compares to other riders on the team.” That information in turn affects what sort of directions the riders get off the bike: “If somebody is doing a lot of work one day, they need to eat more, or they may also need more recovery in upcoming days.” Ketchell said Garmin Connect also provides insights on how much work riders are doing inside the peloton—something that is difficult for a team director to assess from the perspective of a car driving far behind the race action. It reveals “how efficient somebody really is being in the peloton when they are supposed to be recovering or sitting in,” Ketchell noted. In other words, the Garmin invention opens a window on how well a rider is doing their job of not racing hard on days when ...

Eleanor McMahon thinks it’s time to change the conversation around Cycling in Ontario. McMahon is the founder of the Share the Road Cycling Coalition , who will be hosting the fifth annual Ontario Bike Summit this week in Toronto. She says that we need to stop talking about things like bike lanes and other bicycle infrastructure as a zero sum game between cars and bikes. “We do polling, and our polling tells us that 89 per cent of Ontarians are both drivers and cyclists,” she says. “The notion that it’s cars versus bikes is overblown, and it’s really not working anymore. Deciding to change the conversation means going out of our way to poke holes in that idea and say from the get go ‘We don’t buy into that philosophy, and just because you say it, doesn’t make it true.’ ” ...
