Many San Diegans even enjoyed the cool weather while it lasted ... and lasted. July: Mist Opportunities That 4th of July picnic? Opening day at the races? Catching some rays at the beach? Well, maybe you had fun -- if you were huddled under a blanket or umbrella. But for most of us, that family trip to the zoo just wasn't quite the same this year. No one really wants to watch gorillas in the mi ...

St. Mtn. . The effort, which showcased a sound steeped in noise-pop awesomeness was recorded in March 2012 by Jason Kick of Maus Haus fame at Secret Studios. The only complaint mustered about the record was its brevity and complaints like that are soon forgotten when immersed in breath-taking crescendos, and explosions of dreamy fuzz and feedback. Cruel Summer are reminiscent of the mid to late ‘80s C86 and SARAH sound with a dash of 4AD’s hazy early ‘90s catalogue. Naturally, Ghettoblaster had to catch up with CS’ Josh Yule to discuss the record. This is what he said about it… When did you begin writing the material for your record? Thea and I began writing about half of these songs at the end of 2011 when we, (a three-piece band at the time) were deeply in need of a bass player. Thea had some nearly complete songs from her solo project, Wild Gift, and I rushed to catch up. We kinda helped out one another with songwriting and ideas of which direction we should seek. What was the most difficult song to take from the initial writing stage through recording and mixing? Why was it so troublesome? I don’t recall any one particular song being too much of a challenge when writing and recording. We were so high on coffee, pizza, burgers and fries, and beer it was all a blur. Which of the songs on the record is most different from your origin ...

Last year, I played her song " Master of Art " hundreds of times in a matter of months, and this time around, on her latest record, Wheel , my drug is the first single, " Runner ." It sounds like the epitome of Summer—the chorus captures the same bright bitterness of "Vacation" by the Go-Go's, while Stevenson sings over and over, "This Summer hurts." It's the same kind of relationship I have with Summer. I love it, and I hate it.
Dry winter could lead to a cruel summer for Valley growers

But Westlands farmers aren’t the only ones suffering from back-to-back dry winters. It will be a Cruel Summer for growers on millions of San Joaquin Valley acres in the nation’s most productive farming belt. Farm leaders say jobs will be lost, and small-town economies and businesses will be harmed. The Valley’s biggest reservoir — the underground — will continue to be drawn down, forcing many through the expense of redrilling wells and more electricity for pumping. “It’s going to be a long Summer all over the Valley,” said Gary Serrato, general manager of the Fresno Irrigation District, a 245,000-acre agency that includes the Fresno-Clovis area. For years, Serrato’s agency, other water districts and cities in the Valley have invested in ponding basins where they can send excess water to soak into the ground during big rainfall years. They’re raising the groundwater table and preparing for inevitable dry spells, but it’s not enough. Valley groundwater ...
