Saints Could Have a Sleeper Hit in Duron Carter, Son of Cris Carter

Source: blackandgold.com --- Monday, May 13, 2013
Believe it or not, the New Orleans Saints may have a sleeper on their hands during rookie minicamp in former Ohio State receiver Duron Carter, son of the NFL legend Cris Carter. Duron Carter isn’t a name you likely associate with good feelings, and for good reason. He caught one touchdown pass at Ohio State back in 2009 before being declared academically ineligible thanks to poor grades. Carter then bounced to Alabama, never played a snap and wound up with FIU. Now, Carter has a shot at catching passes from Drew Brees with the Saints. On paper, Carter has the measurables you look for in a quality wide receiver. At 6’3″ and 205 pounds with a 4.58 40-yard-dash time at FIU’s Pro Day, it’s hard to not like what Carter brings to the table. Then the character issues pop up. As you would expect, Cris Carter went to bat publicly for his son, providing the reasons as to why he kept bouncing around because of grades and not contributing on the field(per Larry Hartstein of CBS): Duron Carter attended four colleges in four years, starting with his dad’s alma mater Ohio State, and hasn’t played since 2010 when he caught 10 touchdown passes at Coffeyville (Kan.) Junior College. “He. Just. Hates. (Bleeping). School,” a candid Cris Carter told USA Today before the draft. Seems like a good reason, right? In all seriousness, let’s not act like this is the first talented collegiate athlete to bounce around because he was too lazy with school or aca ...

Source: frontrow.espn.go.com --- Wednesday, May 08, 2013
Early in Cris Carter’s NFL playing career, former Minnesota Vikings owner Wheelock Whitney promised to take him to play at the famed Augusta National Golf Club if Carter made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “In fact, he was the first person to ever call me a Hall of Famer,” said Carter of the Minneapolis businessman and philanthropist. Nearly two decades later, Whitney lived up to his promise after the 16-year NFL wide receiver-turned-ESPN-analyst was named to the Hall’s Class of 2013 in February. Last week, Whitney hosted Carter and his brother and another friend at Augusta National for three straight days. “We’ve been going to the Masters for 10 years, but to play the course is a once-in-a-lifetime-type experience,” said Carter, who shot a best round of 82. Playing golf at Augusta National was just the beginning of a memorable week for Carter. On Monday, the former Ohio State star receiver returned to his hometown of Middletown, Ohio, for two days packed with events honoring his career accomplishments. (Middletown is the smallest town in America with Hall of Famers in both football and basketball. Jerry Lucas is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.) That night, Carter, 47, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds in recognition of his election to the Hall of Fame, and in salute to Middletown. Then, the Sunday NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown analyst was honored at his alma mater, Middletown H ...

As I pulled into the main entrance there was artwork on the fence surrounding the school’s track that read “WELCOME BACK Cris!!” with the two exclamation points fitting perfectly with the excitement I felt about today’s events from the moment I set foot in the parking lot. The Middletown Middies had decorated the front door with purple balloons, which are the school’s color, but fit great with Cris Carter’s Hall of Fame career with the Minnesota Vikings. The Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate Insurance were honoring Carter as a part of their “Hometown Hall of Famer” program that celebrates the roots of the greatest players, coaches, and contributors with special community events and plaque dedications. I was thrilled to get the press release and invitation to the event and even more thrilled when I realized I was going to be able to attend. When I walked through the front door of the school I checked into the front desk. The lady asked who I was and when I told her she grabbed a list of names that said “VIP’s” in bold letters at the top and quickly scanned it before looking at me sheepishly. I had a slight moment of panic, hoping she had another list that said “Hack Bloggers” at the top, and that I hadn’t wasted a day off and four hours of drive time for no reason. She was nice enough to let me through and directed me towards the modest gymnas ...

So, it should come as no surprise that he grew up cheering on the Cincinnati Reds. On Monday, Carter was honored by the Reds organization and was asked to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the team hosted the Atlanta Braves at the Great American Ball Park. And wouldn’t you know it? Unlike a litany of athletes who have embarrassed themselves and besmirched their reputations as world-class athletes — Denard Robinson being the more recent casualty — Carter, who was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February and will be inducted this summer, performed more than competently, delivering a fine pitch to his brother. I started my Vikings fandom/ love/ unhealthily all-consuming obsession in 1998 as a bandwagon jumper, after watching in amazement as Randy Moss from Marshall plunged through the draft to that team from Minnesota. Intrigued by what this exciting college receiver would do in the NFL, I watched and was naturally enraptured by how that whole season unfolded- right up until the NFCCG, which I would later learn to expect. Mind you, I have earned my purple-and-gold blood since, because as bandwagoner as my beginnings were, I'm still here. And if you've followed the Vikings for the last decade or so... you know that means a lot. Anyways, '98 was obviously the Season of Moss, we all know this. But as I grew tired with his antics, immaturity, and general jerkiness, it wasn't long into the early years of my Viking fanhood before my true hero was Cris Carter. I missed his startling journey from the supplementary draft to the Eagles, to the waiver wire and then to the Vikings- but what I did see, I'll never forget. Every time the football was in the air, going towards Carter, I knew we had a reception in store... and often some insane sideline catch at that. The guy was an unnatural talent, and he was generally a class act. My heart was broken when he left for the Dolphins in his final season, even though it was very much a mutual decision at the time. Cris Carter was truly my first Viking hero, my first favo ...

Look at it and tell me you have ever seen anything more spectacular. You can't. You would be lying. And I hate liars. I have no real context for this image. I just thought it was important enough to show you all this today on a crappy Monday. I was found from a rather random Twitter account , and that didn't really provide any context either. All they said was "Cris Carter and Randy Moss play an intense game of ping pong." OK. I can see that fairly clearly from the image, as well. But frankly it doesn't matter. Would context even help? I don't need it. JUST LOOK AT THAT PICTURE! Seriously. Those two guys are awesome. This has to be early in Moss' career, don't you think? I thought Randy has an afro or braids during most of his late tenure with the Vikings, so I'm thinking this is like 1999 or 2000 or so. That would mean Carter deserves to look every bit as much of a dad as he obviously does in this picture, with the grey-suit and white tennis shoes, while the young Moss is freaking out like only the Super Freak can do. Those were the times. As an aside, what the crap kind of ping pong table is that? A table for ants? You can't have a 6'4" receiver play ping pong on a table that's half as long as he is tall. That's just stupid. Randy could just as easily reach across and under that table than he could adroitly propel a plastic ball forward between those white lines. And don't tell me tha ...

In this very special edition of '5 minutes in the Holy Land', we talk Big Ten, the Hall of Fame, his son (and former OSU receiver) Duron Carter, and more. It's great for the Hall of Fame to partner with the All-State [who are putting on the Hometown Hall of Famers program ]. Everybody comes from somewhere, and it's great to have a grassroots movement to honor where we came from. Our careers could have gone in lots of different directions without the parents, aunties, little league coaches, and everybody from our communities providing support. After your long and productive career with the Vikings, how does it feel to see your son [Duron Carter] getting a chance to make the team as well? It's an exciting time for him, and it's an exciting time for our family. It's great that the Vikings have given him a first step towards his goal of making a career in pro football. Now, actually making it in the NFL is very difficult, but it sure is nice to see him in that purple uniform. Is there any young player, either still in college or young in the NFL, that reminds ...

Evaluating Cris Carter's Son Duron's NFL Potential

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Monday, April 29, 2013
Duron Carter had a college football career few would have hoped for. Despite his immense talent, Cris Carter’s son couldn ’t get it together in the classroom and found himself without an NFL roster spot following the draft. Carter followed his father’s path to college by enrolling to play at Ohio State, but the 6’5” wideout was declared academically ineligible during his freshman season, choosing to transfer to Coffeyville Community College as a result. It was a wise decision to transfer to a smaller school with fewer expectations for Carter, and his one-year stint at Coffeyville was enough to warrant a transfer to Alabama under head coach Nick Saban. But as was the case at Ohio State just two years earlier, academic issues would get in the way of finding success on the football field. He then transferred to Florida Atlantic, where he didn ’t play a single down in 2012. In a career that saw stops at two major college football programs, Carter recorded just 13 receptions at the Division I level. Despite his son’s issues in the classroom (and questionable work ethic on the field), Cris Carter believes in the wideout and doesn ’t consider his academic performance a result of lack of intelligence, as quoted by Mike Garafolo of USA Today : He didn 't commit a crime, he has no tattoos, he has no kids, and he's a pleasant kid. His thing is he hates school, though. And I'm his dad. He's really bright; he's got an IQ over 130. He just hat ...
