Welcome to another installment of PadGadget’s Flashback Friday. Every week we spotlight a game or app that appeals to the younger version of ourselves. Whether it is an 8-bit side-scrolling game, or a macramé how-to app, we love to go back in time. Last week , we reminded you of the time-sucking PC duo from Cyan Worlds. I had almost forgotten how long it takes to get through Myst. This week, we are getting a little bit Crazy with a flashback to the turn of the century. It is hard to believe that we left the 1900s more than a decade ago. The nineties brought us Grunge music, bowling shirts and the height of the Goth era. It also brought us Crazy Taxi. Crazy Taxi took the gaming world by storm in the late 1990s. By 2000, it had landed in the living room of practically ever kid who owned a Dreamcast, Playstation 2, or GameCube. Players control a supped up Taxi as they barrel down the city streets, looking for the next fare. Players must pick up a fare and race to the next destination in a timed trial game that offered rewards for getting there fast. If you get your fare to his destination within the designated amount of time and with few accidents, you’ll receive a tip. Once you’ve dropped off the fare, drive to the next one and repeat. As the game goes on, you’ll run low on time. Once your clock runs out, the game is over. O clássico jogo Carmageddon (de 1997) foi relançado para iPad e iPhone no final do ano passado, e está grátis. É uma conversão para iOS do jogo original, com algumas novidades interessantes nos controles touch e nos recursos de replay, suporte ao Game Center e compatibilidade com iPad, iPhone e iPod Touch (iOS 5.1 ou posterior). A corrida continua sendo com liberdade de circular pelas ruas da cidade, destruindo os carros dos oponentes e atropelando o público. São 11 cenários, 28 adversários, 30 carros jogáveis e muita violência, a ponto de eu não recomendar o jogo a quem não esteja familiarizado com a ideia, seja impressionável ou influenciável pelo ambiente virtual. Polêmico por natureza desde o princípio, ele inaugurou uma série de sucessos baseados em combates automobilísticos com violência explícita, embora frequentemente humorística – o que não diminui muito a atenção crítica gerada por bônus recebidos ao atropelar pedestres do jogo, por exemplo.
