OSHA proposes extending the deadline to come into compliance with new Crane operator certification to November 2017. Employers may have an additional 3 years to come into compliance with OSHA’s new Crane operator certification requirements. The agency is proposing changing the compliance deadline to Nov. 10, 2017. When OSHA issued its final standard on requirements for cranes and derricks in construction in 2010, the initial deadline to meet qualification/certification requirements for Crane operators was Nov. 10, 2014. Crane operators would have an addition three years–until 2017–to meet certification requirements for safe operation of their equipment, under a proposal announced yesterday by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. In 2010, OSHA issued a final standard on requirements for cranes and derricks in construction work. Under the standard, Crane operators on construction sites must meet one of four qualification/certification options by Nov. 10, 2014. OSHA decided to postpone the date, however, after a number of parties raised concerns about the qualification/certification requirements. OSHA said it is considering addressing these concerns through a later separate rulemaking. In addition, the agency said it will propose to extend the compliance date so that the qualification/certification requirements do not take effect during potential rulemaking or cause disruption to the construction industry. HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — One mistake by a clumsy Crane operator caused a 10-hour blackout over about a third of Vietnam, exposing the fragility of the nation's power grid. State electricity company EVN said in a statement Thursday that the blackout occurred Wednesday after the Crane operator knocked a tree down onto the main north-south high voltage power transmission line. The outage covered 22 of Vietnam's 63 provinces. It was not clear how many people were affected, but the loss of power forced scores of garment and seafood factories to close, and traffic was snarled in major cities as traffic lights failed. State-owned newspaper Thanh Nien reported that the incident cost EVN $700,000 in lost revenue.
