Everyone wants Phillip Supernaw to be his father's son. It'd be the perfect story, the kind of feature sports editors and TV producers coo over. He'd be the son of a country music star chasing a long-shot NFL dream with his hometown Houston Texans. Only real life is rarely perfect. It's messy, complicated and full of surprises. And Phillip Supernaw isn't his father's son. Not in anything more than name. No, he's his mother's boy. "I haven't talked to him once since I've been in the NFL," Supernaw says of his dad. When asked what he thinks his father — country musician Doug Supernaw — would think of his football run, Supernaw simply shrugs. "I have no idea," he says. It's no stretch to say that Supernaw looked to be at worst the third best player on the field. Supernaw made it onto the Texans practice squad as a rookie from a small Division II school last season. This year, he figures to make it onto the field when the games count. He's a big tight end who can catch the football and be physical, a prized commodity in a Gary Kubiak offense that finds it surprisingly short of tight ends at the moment. The former Kansas State quarterback finished third in Heisman Trophy polling last season, but he was undrafted coming off his senior season. Klein was given an opportunity to workout for the Houston Texans this week, and while impressing coach Gary Kubiak , he was not offered a contract with the team. He was asked to workout with the tight ends during the NFL scouting combine and refused. Klein is dead set on his NFL career happening under center as a QB. He should be open to other opportunities in the NFL that may come as a TE or WR, or faces the very distinct possibility of his career fizzling out before it ever gets moving. This attitude is similar to the one that has been shown by Tim Tebow in the past few seasons. Other than a hot streak that included one playoff win with the Denver Broncos , Tebow hasn’t shown that he possesses the skill set required to succeed under center in the NFL. His refusal to be used more creatively in NFL offenses has led to the frustration of the New York Jets , ultimately ending with his release. It’s a release that hasn’t been met with any interest from other NFL teams. The best college quarterback/NFL prospect from Colorado this year was not Collin Klein of Loveland High (and through Kansas State). It was Tim Jenkins of ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch and Fort Lewis College in Durango. Both Klein and Jenkins had tryouts at rookie minicamps last weekend — Klein with the Houston Texans; Lewis with the St. Louis Rams. By all reports, Klein performed well but the Texans did not sign him to a college free agent contract and add him to their offseason roster. Jenkins, meanwhile, passed his audition. He signed Monday with the Rams, where he will enter the OTAs as the team’s No. 4 quarterback behind Sam Bradford, Austin Davis and Kellen Clemens. “There’s Gatorades in every room, and if you need new cleats, you get new cleats,” Jenkins told the Durange Herald. “I think I’m a lot more thankful for it coming from a smaller school.” Jenkins was a four-year starter at Division II Fort Lewis, throwing for 8,968 yards and 47 touchdowns in his career. The way Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak praised Collin Klein over the weekend, it sounded like the former Kansas State quarterback was on his way to signing a free-agent contract with the NFL team. “I tell you what, it was impressive,” Kubiak told reporters when asked about Klein’s weekend performance. “I’m fixing to go up and have a long talk with him. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but to watch how far the guy came in two and a half days; (he) really played probably his best day out here today. He’s found a way his whole career, and he’s probably going to find a way this time, too.” Klein will have to find a way with another NFL team, as it turns out. The Texans didn’t offer Klein a contract, and he left Houston still in search of a NFL home. Those who watched the Texans’ rookie camp indicated Klein got off to a slow start, but showed rapid improvement. “He’s got a ton (of talent),” Kubiak said. “For what he did in college and what Jake (Plummer) has been doing with him, he’s come a long way, as far as working under center and stuff. In the case of Collin Klein , my money is on the latter. Signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State , Klein has made it clear that he plans to play quarterback in the NFL despite several teams asking him to switch positions. There’s a reason that he went undrafted after finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting last season. Throughout his college career, Klein struggled to be an effective, consistent passer. With an awkward throwing motion and lackluster arm strength, his passing was far from NFL-worthy. The biggest reason he made a run at the Heisman was his scrambling ability, something that won’t translate to a capable quarterback at the next level considering his subpar passing. Still, Klein has his heart set on being a signal caller. “In my heart, I know I can do it,” Klein said when asked about playing quarterback in the NFL. “That’s the position I love to play. Until that door closes, I’m going to walk through it.” So what makes him believe that he has a legitimate chance at stealing a spot on the quarterback depth chart with the Texans? (Bo Rader/MCT) Texans coach Gary Kubiak made it clear Monday that former Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein will get a chance at quarterback during this weekend’s rookie minicamp. Klein was a Heisman Trophy finalist, but he did not get drafted. There was talk that he could have improved his draft stock had he moved positions. “We’re going to take a look at him as a quarterback,” Kubiak said. “There’s been a lot of talk if he’d play tight end if he’d do this, if he’d do that.
