Sokolowski – USA TODAY Sports The Toronto Maple Leafs took the Boston Bruins to game seven in their opening round playoff series, and it took a miracle comeback for the Bruins to escape with a win. While the loss was a heartbreaker for the Maple Leafs, the team gained valuable experience by reaching the playoffs this season, and appear poised to be a contender for many seasons to come. While many players stepped up at different times during the season, one of the surprising stars of the series against the Bruins was defenseman Cody Franson , who had a big game seven. Franson scored two goals in games seven to give the Leafs an early lead, and finished the series with three goals and six points. Only Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk scored more for Toronto, and seeing Franson almost tie his season goal total is yet another sign that he is ready to be one of the Maple Leafs top defensemen. Franson finished the regular season with four goals and 29 points, good enough for fourth on the team. He provided more offense than captain Dion Phaneuf and veteran John-Michael Liles . He also proved to be a great addition on the power play, as he scored three of his goals and had 13 points with the man-advantage. The Maple Leafs will need to open their wallets this summer, as Franson is a restricted free agent but has more than proven his worth to the team.
