Source: scribghetti-junction.tumblr.com --- Saturday, May 25, 2013
synduo : Coal in The Mist Comic Here | Gallery here If you guys known me for awhile this is just is a doodle I did from one of my biggest projects. I wish I wasn’t so bombarded with school to work on this…I get depressed thinking about it… I keep debating if I should quit school, since it hasn’t made me happy at all in the past 4years, I guess this is a “Crisis” i’m having? School just seems to never end? I guess it depends on whether what you’re doing at school is going to have any positive bearing on what your goals are. A lot of people seem to think higher education is the only way to get on in life. My experience of college was to be told it probably wouldn’t get me anywhere. The regimental system suppressed my ideas as well. I never went to university as a result, and have instead been working part time and doing my personal projects in the remaining hours. I’ve seen far too many people burn out in university, and worse, far too many people burn out working jobs that may pay more than the average one, but completely mash their brains as a result. So if it’s possible to find an everyday job that brings in a fair wage that allows you to tick along nicely, I’d strongly recommend doing that instead, because it would free up the time spent slaving away on reports and exams and workbooks, time which could be channeled into those projects of yours. And making progress on projects is a very effective antidepressant. ...

Source: www.bluenc.com --- Saturday, May 25, 2013
When it comes to clean water, there's no such thing as a safe short cut: In March, the N.C. Division of Water Quality (DWQ) filed a lawsuit over Coal ash pollution seeping from ponds at a power plant in Asheville, N.C. owned by Duke Energy's Progress subsidiary. This week, DWQ amended that suit to address similar issues at Duke Energy's Riverbend plant on Mountain Island Lake, which provides drinking water for over 750,000 people in the Charlotte area. While it might be a truism to say, "We shouldn't be worrying about Coal waste because we shouldn't be burning Coal anymore", the fact is, we are, and will continue to do so to some degree for many years to come. That being said, Coal proponents love to talk about how cheap it is to burn Coal. But you know what? Costs are accrued during the whole cycle, and that includes disposal of the toxic wastes. Skimping on that not only creates a false cost formula, it can change the chemical formula of our water, too: read more ...

As a sit-in movement continues at the office of Gov. Pat Quinn in Springfield, Ill., besieged southern Illinois residents who have been left out of backroom legislative negotiations over a controversial and admittedly flawed regulatory fracking bill are calling on the nation to contact Gov. Quinn and Lt. Gov. Lisa Madigan to "put a moratorium on drilling to investigate its full climate and health impacts." Residents are also asking for concerned supporters to call members of Illinois' legislature to vote against a bill that health expert Sandra Steingraber has denounced as unscientific and unsafe.
