Microsoft is increasing its number of Xbox Live servers to 300,000, up from only 500 at launch and 15,000 today. The servers will help power a lot of the new Xbox dashboard features , but they'll also be a core part of Microsoft's Cloud Gaming plans. The software giant didn't discuss these plans in detail during the Xbox One unveiling earlier this week, but an Ars Technica interview with General Manager of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms Matt Booty sheds some light on the 300,000-server Cloud architecture. Part of the server setup will be... Continue reading… ...

Wii U GamePad Reverse-Engineered, Capable of Cloud Gaming

Source: www.gamnesia.com --- Wednesday, May 15, 2013
Recently, the folks over at Eurogame.net had the opportunity to speak with Pierre Bourdon; Bourdon, who is affiliated with the Dolphin emulator, recently teamed up with a few colleagues to reverse-engineer the Wii U GamePad and transfer its functionality to a PC. In the process, the self-proclaimed hackers discovered what makes Nintendo's innovative controller really tick. For those wanting a complete technical breakdown, I suggest sneaking over to the article after I've finished, but first I'll go over the basics. The GamePad is not nearly as complex as the most basic Android tablets, which makes sense considering that the GamePad is not an independent tablet, but rather a sophisticated game controller. The controller uses WiFi communication to send and receive information from the console, as opposed to the Bluetooth connections utilized by the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. Analysis of this connection confirms that the Wii U shares similar parts with the PS4 and next Xbox that could allow for Cloud Gaming and game streaming if enabled by Nintendo. According to Bourdon: I don't see any reason why it could not send GamePad video/audio to the internet (both internet and GamePad might be difficult/impossible). The firmware of the chip handling communication with the GamePad (called DRH) can be upgraded, so this might be in Nintendo's future plans. Only speculation though, we didn't see anything in the firmware that would indicate they are ...

Source: www.cedailynews.com --- Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Ubitus Inc. today announced it has raised over $15 million cash from multiple international leading investors including Samsung Venture Investment Corporation (Samsung Ventures) for further spearheading the push of Cloud Gaming to next level. Since its first Cloud Gaming deployment in Japan in September 2011, Ubitus had been leading the global market in deploying commercial Cloud Gaming services with top-tier carriers and OEMs spanning across the United States, Japan, South Koreaand China (including Hong Kong). Backed by the solid market-proven track records, the new round funding led by Samsung Ventures, the venture capital arm of the Samsung Group with mandate to invest in companies that are closely tied to the overall strategy of Samsung Group, will further support Ubitus' determined endeavor in advancing the Cloud Gaming to an unprecedented level especially in the TV market. "We are delighted that leading investors like Samsung Ventures shares Ubitus' conviction that making video games playing as accessible as the movie and music streaming services nowadays can forever change the way people enjoy games in the past 20 years," said Wesley Kuo, CEO of Ubitus. Going forward, with the new investment garnered, Ubitus is committed to take Cloud Gaming to next level by building new Gaming experiences with more instant and social features that are expected to roll out in Q3 this year. ...

Founded in 2007, Ubitus deployed its first Cloud Gaming service in Japan in September 2011 and has been deploying commercial offerings with carriers and OEMs – including Samsung – spanning across the United States and Asia ever since. The company says it will use the capital to advance Cloud Gaming “to an unprecedented level especially in the TV market”. The company made headlines this year when it brought its Cloud Gaming solutions to Google TV and teamed up with Sega of America to enable Cloud Gaming for SEGA’s most popular mobile titles. Wesley Kuo, CEO of Ubitus, comments on the $15 million round thusly: “We are delighted that leading investors like Samsung Ventures shares Ubitus’ conviction that making video games playing as accessible as the movie and music streaming services nowadays can forever change the way people enjoy games in the past 20 years (sic).” Ubitus says it will build new Gaming experiences with “more instant and social features” and expects to roll these out in Q3 2013. Aside from Samsung Ventures, Ubitus didn’t disclose the names of its investors for this round, although its website lists DOCOMO Innovation Fund, Acorn Campus Ventures, Birch Venture Capital and IT-Farm Corporation as financial backers. This has all but guaranteed that Cloud Gaming will continue to have a place in the industry going forward, but it still remains to be seen how much it will and whether or not the other console manufacturers will embrace it in some way. Microsoft is of course keeping quite until their next-gen reveal on May 21, but Nintendo has now offered its two cents on the matter. Nintendo head-honcho Satoru Iwata recently met with investors and was asked if they had any plans to incorporate Cloud services, but he quite firmly shot down the ideas. “I believe that there are games that have an affinity with Cloud Gaming and games that do not,” he said. ” On the other hand, I don’t think that our games, particularly the types that have strict requirements in terms of real-time responsiveness, can offer high-quality services using Cloud Gaming technology because of unavoidable network latency.” Iwata also did mention that Nintendo does try to keep up with advancements in the technology and infrastructure required for seamless streaming, but the current environment doesn’t nece ...

Source: www.shacknews.com --- Tuesday, April 30, 2013
Sony's acquisition of Gaikai suggests that this "Cloud Gaming" thing may be a critical feature in the coming years. Through its streaming services, Sony will be able to theoretically stream PlayStation games across any number of devices. However, Nintendo doesn't seem too optimistic on the service quite yet. "Of course, we constantly pay attention to the advances and changes in Cloud Gaming technology and Internet infrastructure," Nintendo head Satoru Iwata said. "On the other hand, I don't think that our games, particularly the types that have strict requirements in terms of real-time responsiveness, can offer high-quality services using Cloud Gaming technology because of unavoidable network latency." Nintendo also pointed to latency as why Wii U's dual-screen functionality will best SmartGlass by Microsoft, and Vita integration by Sony. "We will of course continue to see how this technology develops, but in order to decide whether Cloud Gaming is something that we should be interested in, we will need to closely follow the changes in technology and also the business environment," Iwata told investors. It appears Nintendo will approach Cloud Gaming as it has with many other technological advances. It took a "wait and see" approach with HD Gaming, digital distribution, and online connectivity. "However, at this point in time, I do not think that acquiring a Cloud Gaming company will in any way improve our performance, so we are n ...

Ahead of the show we find out why fibre is such an important focus for the Brazilian telco. FTTH is clearly the optimal solution performance wise, but is clearly cost prohibitive. Does is make sense to invest in FTTH? Large companies, such as GVT, have to invest in fibre to achieve a greater geographical footprint. Spreading to new areas using FTTH makes sense as the CAPEX...
Boxes and a Bar: OnLive Employees Pack Up After Cloud Gaming Company Obfuscates About Fate (Photos)

And some, no surprise, are headed to a nearby bar — The Patio — presumably to drown their sorrows. The departures from the online Cloud-Gaming service came after a meeting this morning in which its top execs told staff that it would be letting almost the entire staff go, but without a lot of explanation of what that meant. While founder and CEO Steve Perlman runs a number of other digital efforts — via his own Rearden Labs — at its Silicon Valley HQ, sources said only fraction of staffers will be left to keep the servers running until a resolution for the assets is found. Kotaku reported that OnLive would be filing an “alternative to bankruptcy called an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors, or ABC, in the state of California.” It is not clear who actually owns the pricey technology and patents for OnLive, which has raised $56 million in funding from investors such as Maverick Capital, Time Warner and HTC. HTC, the Taiwanese telecom giant, invested $40 million of the total in early 2011 . That’s a lot of dough, so it is not clear what has happened or if Perlman is poised to sell off the entity. Sony recently bought one of OnLive’s rivals in the space — Gaikai — for $380 million to turbocharge its Cloud-Gaming service efforts. One thing is entirely clear: Whil ...
