The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game Homer Bailey threw a not-quite-Hossian six innings, but allowed just two runs while striking out eight, walking three, and not allowing any homeruns. That title about sums it up! On Thursday, my husband and I made a quick trip out to Montrose Park in Chicago to see what we could see bird-wise. It was rainy! It was blowing! BUT guess what we saw? Lots! A worm-eating warbler (yes, that's its name) and . . . Warblers: Black & Whites, Magnolia, Black-Throated Greens, Yellow, Palm, Wilson's, ovenbird, the one Phil and I call "the bandit." (That one is yellow with a lone-ranger mask over it's eyes.) We also saw a thrasher, an oriole low to the ground so we could watch him preen, lots of flycatchers, lots of thrushes of all sorts including gray-cheeked . . . I'm forgetting some, but it was wonderful. Chicago has it's wild spots and it's fun to find them! Then Phil and I went to the grocery store to pick up the stuff you can't get at the farmer's market (fruit!). Other news? Went to a wonderful pottery tour up in the St. Croix River Valley area in Minnesota and Wisconsin over Mother's Day. I try to do this every year with my mom and our friend, Dorothy. This year -- like always because I cannot resist -- I bought some pottery. On this tour you go to the potter's homes, and they're back-to-the-earth types who make lovely, lovely things and live pretty simply.
