Vandalism Suspect Caught on Video in Chevy Chase

A man suspected of throwing large rocks at a Chevy Chase Village house was caught on tape by village security cameras as he left the yard of the vandalized property, Chevy Chase Village police said. The suspect threw the rocks at a window and expensive set of French doors from the rear yard of the property—in the 5500 block of Montgomery Street, Chevy Chase—at around 1 a.m. on April 29, police said in a statement released on May 21. The house sustained thousands of dollars' worth of damage in the incident, police said. Village security cameras captured images of the suspect as he left the yard of the vandalized home. The photographs show a black male, about 6 feet tall and 230 pounds, police said. The suspect "appears to be in his 30s, and he was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, a blue backpack, dark blue work pants and dark shoes," police reported. Peapod Pickup to Replace Chevy Chase Lake Sunoco

The site of the former Sunoco gas station at 8500 Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase Lake will become a Peapod grocery pickup location as well as a gas station run by Giant Food by late summer or early fall, Giant Food spokesperson Jamie Miller told Patch. Peapod is the home delivery arm of—and sister company to—Giant, Miller explained. While Peapod charges a service fee for home delivery of Giant groceries, there will be no service fee for the pickup of groceries from the grocery pickup location. Setting up a storefront at which Giant/Peapod customers may pick up their groceries is a relatively new idea. Two pickup locations were set up last month—in Clarksville, MD, and Columbia, MD, Miller said. (Giant is based in Maryland, and has 171 stores in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington, DC.) Earlier this spring, the former Sunoco gas station on the site was demolished, leaving residents wondering what was next. Giant decided to open the pickup location in Chevy Chase Lake after determining that the need existed in this area for this kind of service. With a Peapod pickup, one's groceries already are selected and packed up, but there's no worry about the groceries getting delivered when one is not at home. Sounds convenient enough. After taking longer than expected to return for season 4, NBC is bringing back Community for season 5. Ratings from last night’s season finale were impressive enough for executives to turn their heads (it matched American Idol in the under 35 demographic) and give Community at least one more semester on NBC. Right now there’s a question as to just how many episodes this fifth season will have, but Vulture says there should be at least 13 episodes, just like this past season. Friendship Heights' newest restaurant—Mi Cocina—opened on Friday with a 10:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. The upscale Tex-Mex restaurant opened in the former M Cafe / Famoso / Piazza Sempione spot, which shuttered unexpectedly on April 19, 2011, Patch reported . The space has been vacant since then. An 18-year-old District teen was sentenced to seven years in prison for the November burglary and attack of an elderly Chevy Chase woman. In February, Tyran Mcelrath pleaded guilty to the Nov. 7, 2012 robbery of the home of an 81-year-old woman in the 3500 block of McKinley Street NW. Prosecutors said Mcelrath broke into the womanâs home through a basement window while the victim was on the second floor listening to music. Police said Mcelrath stole the womanâs computer and some loose change from her purse. The mention of an arrest or charge does not indicate a conviction. A strong-arm robbery occurred at Wisconsin Avenue and Highland Avenue, Bethesda, on Monday, April 15, at about 6 a.m. The suspect assaulted the victim, then removed property. An aggravated assault occurred in the 7500 block of Pearl Street, Bethesda, on Wednesday, April 17, at about 3 p.m. The suspect threatened the victim, then fled. A commercial office burglary occurred at 4340 East West Highway, Bethesda, during the night between Wednesday, April 17, and Thursday, April 18. Entry was gained into an office suite by unknown means, and property was taken. A residential burglary occurred in the 8200 block of Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, on Wednesday, April 17, between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. There was an unforced entry, and property was taken.
