The last time Bill Callahan was in charge of calling the plays for an NFL offense, it was with the Oakland Raiders in 2003 as head coach. In 2013, he'll make his return to the role as offense coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys , and it's an opportunity that he told Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com that he's looking forward to. Rangers captain Ryan Callahan told the team’s website this week that his shoulder is starting to feel better after he received surgery on it after the Rangers season ended. Callahan hurt his shoulder in his fight against Max Talbot at the end of January. He said that playing through an injuries is something that everyone does and if you can get out on the ice there are no excuses. With 39 of 41 precincts reporting, Kingston has 2,339 votes, or 55 percent, to Abtahi’s 1,946 votes, or 45 percent. Kingston will replace Councilwoman Angela Hunt, a staunch LGBT supporter who was term limited and endorsed Kingston in the race. District 14 is among the most heavily LGBT in the city and covers parts of Oak Lawn, East Dallas and downtown. Kingston and his supporters gathered at the Pour House on Skillman. In his victory speech, Kingston thanked his all-volunteer staff and supporters for running a clean and positive race. “Our message was issues-driven and relentlessly positive,” Kingston told Dallas Voice. “That resonated with voters in District 14.” Abtahi and several dozen supporters waited for results at The Mason Bar in Uptown. Both candidates have expressed strong support for the LGBT community in the heavily gay district that includes parts of Oak Lawn, East Dallas and downtown. Kingston received 1,215 early votes, or 54 percent, to Abtahi’s 1,024 votes, or 46 percent, according to results posted by the Dallas County Elections Office shortly after polls closed at 7 p.m. It’ll take another hour or two to count Election Day results, and we won’t know the outcome until they’re posted, but early voting results can be a good indicator of where a race is headed. In this case, while Kingston clearly has an edge, the race is still too close to call. In the District 5 Dallas City Council race, Rick Callahan led Jesse Diaz after early voting. Callahan received 500 early votes, or 57 percent, to Diaz’s 381 votes, or 43 percent. In another race of LGBT interest, out Fort Worth school board member Carlos Vasquez trailed challenger Jacinto Ramos after early voting, according to the Tarrant County Elections Office . Callahan, LAWRENCE CORNELIUS was born August 10, 1928 in Albuquerque, NM, and passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the age of 84. Larry honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps after World War II. Larry was an electrician, handy man and artist. He never knew a stranger and was glad to lend a helping hand to anyone in need; from the needy in Albuquerque, to the churches in Honduras (where he went with his wife Lola for short term missions). He was big hearted, happy, always cheerful, gregarious, fun loving, with a touch of mischief thrown in for flavor. As well he was always there to take care of and help his family. Larry was in high demand as a ballroom dancer wherever he went. Larry lit up the room whenever he entered. Larry was a great person, wonderful husband, loving father, great uncle and grandfather. We love you and we will miss you, Uncle Lo. He was preceded in death by his dad, Cornelius Callahan; mother, Genevieve Callahan; sister, Regina Romero; brother, Fred Callahan and by his son, Kenny Hayhurst. IRVING – Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett set the record straight Tuesday after the team’s first day of mini-camp. Garrett said when the Cowboys coaching staff was finalized in late January that it was clear inside the organization that Bill Callahan would be calling the team’s offensive plays going forward. However, Garrett didn’t want anyone outside of Valley Ranch to know that because he thought it would be a competitive disadvantage. But on Tuesday, Garrett admitted that he “didn’t do a very good job” of publicly communicating that change. Last week, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones strongly suggested Callahan would be taking over as play-caller, something Callahan confirmed shortly after. But when Garrett was asked about the play-calling situation during a press conference the same day, the team’s play-caller since 2007 denied that a switch had been finalized. “Just to say it one more time, Mr. Jones, Stephen (Jones) and I, we’re all on the same page and have been on the same page for months and been acting that way around this building,” Garrett said Tuesday. “We just hadn’t said it out loud.” Garrett later added: “Where I made a mistake as a head coach was making sure the communication publicly happened more cleanly.
