Gay couples can not claim a right to family or marriage as these are “based on fundamental laws of nature,” Colombia’s CATHOLIC CHURCH said Tuesday in a fierce attack on pending gay rights reforms. In a press conference, cardinal Ruben Dario Salazar strongly opposed to reforms in legislation regarding gay rights imposed by Colombia’s constitutional Court that ordered Congress to come up with legislation defining the rights of the country’s LGBT community. According to Salazar, public officials should be able to continue to exercise their right to morally object to performing their jobs when it comes to applying the law on gay people, as things like family and marriage are not a right, but a privilege. Consequently, the cardinal said, gay people are not subject to discrimination. “The argument that always has been used is that of discrimination. But discrimination is when a person is denied access to a right they have. When there is no real right then there is no discrimination,” said the clergy. “What is it that is being denied to the homosexual community? Meanwhile (and this relates to the two pieces I've just posted about LGBT folks and CATHOLIC, Inc ., and about how Pope Francis is being perceived ), isn't it interesting how very little notice the finding of that recent Pew study that most gay Americans see the CATHOLIC CHURCH as conspicuously unfriendly to us is getting in the media? It has been more or less ignored by both the secular and the CATHOLIC media. Why is that the case, I wonder? Some thoughts: ∙For liberals (and centrists) both in the mainstream media and the CATHOLIC media (and academy), it's altogether too easy to keep pointing to data showing that a majority of lay Catholics in the U.S. support gay rights and to conclude that there's really not a gay problem in the U.S. CATHOLIC CHURCH. ∙This lets these liberals (and centrists) off the hook. A new Pew Research Center study provides an abysmal assessment of the CATHOLIC CHURCH for those of us who value LGBT inclusion in our faith communities. In a study of 1,197 LGBT adults released on June 13, 2013, 79 percent of those questioned rated Catholicism as "unfriendly" to LGBT people. Only 4 percent view our CHURCH as "friendly." This is probably not surprising to many, due to the long list of anti-LGBT statements, actions and positions promoted by leaders of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, both here in the U.S. and across the globe in recent decades. Even as the study was being released, word of Pope Francis' acknowledgement of a "gay lobby" within the Vatican and his linkage of that phrase with corruption among CHURCH leaders raised anxiety among LGBT Catholics. We wonder what it is we'll be blamed for this time, even as media representatives and others scramble to interpret what the pope meant in his speech. However, for those of us who identify as CATHOLIC and LGBT, as supportive family members, or simply as ordinary Catholics dismayed by the Pew survey's findings, it raises at least two key challenges. First, it forces us to question how these numbers can coexist with other national surveys that repeatedly demonstrate that U.S. Catholics support civil rights for LGBT people at levels higher than any other denomination, and that relatively few Catholics view same-sex relationships as sinful.
