I visited with him this morning, and the transcription of our conversation is below. AJM: ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball this week features the Tigers in Arlington against the Rangers. Do you think these are the best two teams in baseball right now? Olney: I don’t. I think the Tigers still have to sort through some bullpen issues in order for them to climb up to that next level. Its not clear where that’s going to come from. I think the Rangers have certainly earned their stature, and knowing that they’ve got all these different pitchers who could be coming back healthy during the year I think only reinforces that. I was actually, the other day, I was riding back from the Sunday night game last weekend, and the conversation popped up in the car with Dan Shulman and Boog Sciambi and others. We were saying, “Who are the best teams in baseball right now?” And Boog and I both settled on the Rangers and Cardinals. I think the Cardinals are, especially with Edward Mujica becoming such a strong closer for them, along with the Rangers, the two best teams. AJM: Part of what makes the Rangers’ success so surprising to some is the fact that they were considered to be one of the big losers of the offseason. They seemed to have a lot of irons in the fire, but nothing really panned ...

The slumping Sox lost to the Rays on Tuesday night, with the winning run scoring on a popup at Tropicana Field that first baseman Mike Napoli couldn’t handle. That revived the debate about the oft-criticized domed building. Olney said the Rays would love to get out of their lease, but they have no easy way out. “The bottom line is that they’ve got this terrible lease with the city of St. Petersburg,” Olney said. “Baseball would love for them to move out of St. Petersburg and out of the Trop. The Rays would love to move out of there. And people all around baseball would love for them to move out of there. But until the city of St. Petersburg signs off on this thing, they’re kind of stuck. And it stinks. Because that organization clearly has a lot of promise; it’s as well-run an organization as there is in baseball. They’ve done a phenomenal job of competing despite the limitations that they have within that park. “And until it changes, it is going to feel like they’re playing in their grandmother’s basement, let’s face it. The ball hitting the ceiling, and the different rules, and how many rings and all that stuff — it’s a completely different type of baseball than there is in any other park.” Jacoby Ellsbury , who becomes a free agent at the end of the season, is having a disappointing ...

Happ took a line drive to the head Tuesday, the state of the Red Sox pitching, and the constant suspicion that players are using performance-enhancing drugs if their performance improves. In the wake of Happ’s injury, the discussion about requiring protective headgear for pitchers has come up again. Olney noted some of the issues that would make it hard to implement such a rule, including the effect it would have on pitchers’ mechanics and the players’ general resistance to change. “The number of instances of this happening is actually on the increase, according to research that Willie [ Weinbaum , of ESPN] has done,” Olney said. “Major League Baseball, for good reason, is concerned, because the 60 feet, 6 inches is not going to change. What Willie has found is that they’re having a difficult time coming up with a lined cap, and if you go beyond a lined cap — maybe even with a lined cap I think you’re going to get the initial response from a lot of players, which is, I don’t know if I want to wear that, that looks kind of weird. When David Wright wore that oversized helmet, there was definitely that old-school pushback on style. “In 2007, Mike Coolbaugh , who was a coach in the minor leagues, was killed by a line drive, and after that Major League Baseball basically made a rule saying a ...
