They're far from perfect, but they have a few advantages over normal analysis. Mostly: they tend to be objective and relatively data-based rather than emotion-based. It's easy to be too positive or too negative if you're emotionally invested in a team, and this generally isn't the case for sports books. Unfortunately, those same sports really don't seem to like what the Bucs did. The Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno was the first sportsbook to release their 2013 NFL win totals, and they set the initial line for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 6.5 wins, according to Covers.com . Meanwhile, per CBS , the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have an over/under set at 7.5 wins with the LVH Superbook. Predictably, Bucs fans disagree. A poll we ran a few days ago set the Bucs' wins at 11. That's a pretty massive gap between what sportsbooks think and what fans think, though that's probably not very surprising given the eternal optimism among fans. But given Las Vegas' reaction to the Bucs' offseason moves, perhaps we shouldn't be too positive about the team's chances this season. That's no surprise: he was drafted third overall for a reason, and after two injury-shortened seasons in 2010 and 2011 he put up a very good Pro Bowl season in 2012. He's a surprisingly stout run defender given that that was seen as a weakness coming out of college to the extent that Mark Dominik even noted in his post-draft press conference at the time that McCoy had to improve his side anchor. McCoy has to make his mark against the pass, though. That's where he earns his money, and he's been a disruptive presence throughout his career. One complaint so far has been McCoy's relative lack of sacks, which is attributable to a number of different issues. One complaint has been that McCoy has been double teamed too often. There's some truth to that -- so how do the Bucs fix that? How do you get McCoy more one-on-ones? The same way Tampa Bay managed to give Warren Sapp one-on-ones. The 4-3 Under The Stunt 4-3 and the tilted nose tackle The tilted nose tackle and the Stunt 4-3 are inextricably linked, and a big part of the Buccaneers' defensive scheme. To understand how the Tampa Bay defense gave Warren Sapp consistent one-on-one opportunities, we first have to understand how the Bucs' defense worked. Duddee had an outstanding article on the 4-3 front the Buccaneers used and still use, and reading that will get you caught up with the basics of techniques and some termi ...

Carl Nicks is one of the very best offensive guards in the NFL, and someone who would be named an All-Pro every year if he was healthy. Davin Joseph has been to two Pro Bowls and is a nasty mauler of a guard who can more than hold his own in pass protection. Jeremy Zuttah is not an All-Pro at center, but he's a solid professional who produces solid games week after week and has the versatility to play both guard spots adequately. And for once, the Bucs actually have decent depth at this position. Ted Larsen isn't a great player, but he played well at center last season and can play guard, though he's not great at that position. Jamon Meredith was previously a mediocre tackle at best, but held his own when asked to step in until late in the season, when the offensive line as a whole seemed to collapse. The Bucs won't feel secure if one of their starters suffers an injury, but they have better depth at these positions than most NFL teams. A history of injury problems The Buccaneers are likely to need that depth, sadly, because they have suffered injury issues along the interior offensive line for every season since Jon Gruden was fired. Good length and tall frame for the position. Natural flexibility and agile footwork to quickly redirect, driving fast and physical on plays. Always seems to know where the ball is, quickly locates and aggressively goes after it. Good discipline to read routes and stay glued to receivers. Very good ball skills to snatch the ball out of the air and was a ball- hawk in the secondary with a school – record 16 career interceptions. Comfortable and confident in coverage , using his eyes to bait throws. Opportunistic and never afraid to take chances. Aggressive and tough against the run and works hard to shed. Lacks ideal bulk but doesn’t shy from big hits, and it’s easy to love his physical nature and competitiveness. Firey , known as a vocal team leader with strong football character, work ethic and ambition. Johnthan Banks wil be a big time player this season in Tampa. Sports Talk Florida’s Bucs Insider Jenna Laine broke the news of the contract details, outlining that Banks will receive fully guaranteed pay in years one and two of the deal, in addition to a singing bonus. Here is the breakdown from Jenna: Details of player contracts are not made available to the public, but a source tells Sports Talk Florida that Banks’ deal is worth $4,726,321 and includes a signing bonus of $1,817,324. Banks will earn a base salary of $405,000 in 2013, which is standard for NFL rookies. In 2014, that figure jumps to $619,833. In 2015, he’ll make $834,666 and in 2016, $849,498. This is just another sign of how valuable draft picks can be, because Banks will be making a very small salary (in NFL terms) for four years, and may wind up being an every week starter at some point during this deal, making him a massive value pick for the Bucs. Banks may not step into a starter’s role right away, but he doesn’t have to. He’s got plenty of competition at cornerback, which is a surprising statement given the results from the secondary last season, and there are questions about his speed and his lack of experience as a press-man corner. His inexpensive contract and the prese ...

All rookies sign four-year deals, per the NFL CBA. Banks participated in all offseason workouts so far without a contract, but has now put pen to paper. This was mostly a formality as there was little room for negotiations under the NFL's rookie salary cap rules. Over The Cap estimated that Banks would receive a four-year contract worth $4.73 million with a $1.82 million signing bonus. So far, Over The Cap has been pretty accurate in forecasting rookie deals. Update: Jenna Laine has the contract details , including a fully guaranteed salary in 2013 and 2014. With Banks signed, the Buccaneers now have all of their drafted rookies under contract, with the exception of third-round quarterback Mike Glennon . Quarterback contracts tend to be a little more complicated than non-quarterback contracts, although that shouldn't be a huge issue with the new CBA. Glennon, too, has participated in all offseason workouts so far. Denton was an outstanding punt returner at the University of Mount Union but apparently failed to impress the Buccaneers in OTAs. New addition Terriun Crump is a second-year receiver who went undrafted last year, signed with the Chicago Bears but was released a few days prior to the start of the season during final roster cuts. He spent the past year on the Edmonton Eskimos' practice roster, and was one of the tryouts during Bucs' rookie minicamp. Crump has outstanding size at 6'3", 220 lbs. but isn't overly fast, running a 4.64 40-yard dash at this pro day. He managed 135 receptions for 2,067 yards and 11 touchdowns in his three-year career at Western Illinois. Crump will presumably compete for a roster spot with Steve Smith, David Douglas, Chris Owusu , Jheranie Boyd, Jerry Johnson , Eric Page and Tim Wright .
Tom Crabtree Compares The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Roster To The Green Bay Packers, Is He On To Something?

Crabtree was just one of many potential targets in the Green Bay, and now finds himself in Tampa Bay where the competition is perceived to be less steep. And while it may just be an act of goodwill towards the team that’s giving him a chance to earn a bigger role in the offense, Crabtree things that the competition in Tampa Bay is just as fierce. In fact, he went so far as to compare the talent to that of the Green Bay Packers. Pewter Report’s Mark Cook quoted Crabtree as having said the following about his new teammates : “Man, I’ll tell you what – being here for a month, some of the best, just gifted athletes I’ve been around. Some really talented guys. That’s not taking anything away from Green Bay. They’ve obviously had talented guys, as well. But coming here there’s been no dropoff as far as the athleticism and the talent of guys.” Crabtree may be a bit biased towards the team who offered him a contract versus the team that neglected to offer him a restricted free agent tender, but he may also be on to something. Are the Buccaneers as talented as the Packers? Let’s quickly go position by position and see if the Bucs’ newest tight end has a point. Mandatory Cred ...

What a surprise, right? At least at offensive tackle, almost every NFL team has depth issues. Good tackles are tough to find. So tough that the Bucs are starting two players who entered the league as undrafted free agents..wait, that doesn't sound logical. It's been a long time since they entered the league, though, and both Donald Penn and Demar Dotson have developed into solid starters. Starting concerns There are some concerns here. Donald Penn looked like he was starting a decline last season, and seemed to play worse than he had in 2010 and 2011. Penn has always had weight issues, even for a position where "be fat" is basically the job description, but he is supposedly in "the best shape of his career" . That phrase is overused and generally means nothing, but the last time that phrase was used in connection with Penn was 2010 -- and he followed that up by producing a strong, Pro Bowl season. Penn should be a fine starter for a few more seasons and barring an unexpected collapse should at least be solid this season. Demar Dotson is another story. Physically, Dotson is incredible. He's a former basketball player who had never played offensive tackle before getting to the NFL four years ago, but the Bucs have since taught him how to be an adequate starter. He's a decent pass blocker but lacks power in the run game ...

Buccaneers Running Back Breakdown: Full Evaluation and Depth Chart Analysis

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Tuesday, May 21, 2013
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rushing attack improved by leaps and bounds in 2012 , when compared to how they fared the season prior . The Bucs averaged 114.8 rushing yards per game last season, ranking them in the top-half of the NFL (15th). In contrast, they finished with the 30th-ranked rushing offense in 2011 when they averaged just 91.1 yards per game. But that isn't where the improvements stopped. The Bucs also increased their rushing touchdowns from nine in 2011 to 13 in 2012. They had five rushes that went at least 40 yards and 12 rushes that went at least 20 yards last season, compared to just one and seven, respectively, the year before. Oh, and they cut down on their rushing fumbles by better than 50 percent, coughing it up only three times in 2012 (second fewest) against eight in 2011 (fifth most). So why the sudden and drastic improvement on the ground, you ask? Simply put, the talent improved. Doug Martin burst onto the scene, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns, including an out-of-this-world performance against the Oakland Raiders in Week 9 when he rushed for 251 yards and four TDs . Tack on 49 catches for 474 receiving yards and all told, Martin totaled 368 touches, 1,928 total yards of offense and 12 touchdowns. Not too bad for a rookie. Put it this way: LeGarrette Blount was the second-leading rusher on the team last season with just 151 yards. Martin, on the other hand, rushed for 125-plus yards in a game fiv ...
