Christopher Booker: The EU U-Turn Over Energy Policy

Source: www.thegwpf.org --- Saturday, May 25, 2013
What happened last week could prove to be a unique example in the EU’s history of it recognising that it has made such a catastrophic blunder that its policy must change. In March, we are now told (although it was reported here at the time), Britain came within hours of running out of gas and facing enormous power cuts. Meanwhile, almost wholly unnoticed by the British media, there were signs last week of a mighty earthquake beginning to take place in the EU’s energy policy. For 20 years, as we know, this has been hijacked by the EU’s fixation with climate change. But at Wednesday’s meeting of the European Council, there were, at last, indications that many countries now recognise that the EU’s bid to lead the world in “de-carbonising” is leading the European economy towards meltdown. They have finally cottoned on to the fact that, in recent years, while energy prices in Europe have been doubling, those in the US, thanks to the shale gas revolution, have halved. Thanks to the demonising of fossil fuels, the obsession with windmills and ever-rising taxes on any economic activity that emits CO₂, European countries have been alarmed to see ever more European firms being forced either to move their operations outside the EU, or to shut down altogether (as we saw here in Britain recently with the closure of our last remaining major aluminium smelter, at the cost of 500 jobs). Astonishingly, even that great greenie David Cameron told j ...

Among the top 75 players in Ohio as ranked by the Rivals site BuckeyeGrove.com, 25 have given oral commitments so far. The Buckeyes have more of them than any other school, with Cincinnati linebacker Sam Hubbard falling outside the top 75. From the 25 pledged players, five have committed to Ohio State, including linebacker Dante Booker (No. 2), linebacker Kyle Berger (No. 6), offensive lineman Kyle Trout (No. 7), running back Parris Campbell (No. 15) and offensive lineman Marcelys Jones. Currently, Ohio State is third in the recruiting ranks behind Notre Dame and Michigan. Last season, Ohio finished with a perfect 12-0 record but never made it to a bowl game because of NCAA sanctions. In February, Meyer declared that Ohio State was much further ahead in recruiting for 2014 than the Buckeyes had been the year before. However, Ohio State’s recruitment has been challenged by Michigan, Notre Dame and other programs like Louisville and Kentucky. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserve ...

The 4-star linebacker has been long-expected to give his word to become a Buckeye, and the day finally came. It came as a shock to no one participating in Booker's 247Sports' Crystal Ball prediction page , as I , Charles Doss , Bret Favachio , and 11 others all had Booker to the Buckeyes. With Kyle Berger and now Dante Booker in the fold, stay tuned to who else will make up the Buckeyes' '14 linebacker class. Chase Winovich and Raekwon McMillan seem to be the early favorites. In expected (but nonetheless exciting) news, '14 4-star wide receiver Derek Kief , out of Cincinnati, named his initial top five schools. In a rather unique way to announce a first cut of schools, Kief included Notre Dame, Kentucky, Ohio State, Northwestern, and Alabama in a creative saying that words cannot do justice. See for yourself below: In the only offer issued yesterday, the staff reached out to '14 Boston College defensive end commit Harold Landry . Since giving his verbal to the Eagles back on April 5th, many major programs have thrown offers at him, attempting to sway him from his commitment. In addition to Ohio State, big-time schools like Clemson, Miami, Ole Miss, Florida State, Auburn, and others have all conducted their own research on Landry, and some schools ha ...

Source: blogs.reuters.com --- Thursday, May 23, 2013
LONDON (Reuters) – American short story writer Lydia Davis won the fifth Man Booker International Prize for fiction on Wednesday for a body of work that includes some of the briefest tales ever published. Davis, a professor of creative writing at the University of Albany, is best known for work that Observer critic William Skidelsky once said “redefines the meaning of brevity”. She is also an accomplished translator whose English versions of Marcel Proust’s “Du Cote de Chez Swann” (Swann’s Way) and Gustave Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary” helped earn her a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in France. Davis said it was Proust’s monumental work and famously long sentences that helped inspire her succinct writing style. “Actually, when I was translating Proust was when I thought ‘how short could a short story be?’” she told Reuters after receiving the 60,000 pound award in London. “I thought ‘how little could you say and still have it work?’” Some of Davis’s longer stories may run to two, three, as many as nine pages, while others can be as brief as a paragraph or even just a sentence. “Idea for a Short Documentary Film” in the 2009 “Collected Stories of Lydia Davis” reads: “Representatives of different food products manufacturers try to open their own packaging.” Davis – who has only written one novel – beat out a shortlist of 10 contenders for the prize that included two authors banned in their home countries, the youngest ever ...
