I was able to sit down with the film’s director Saschka Unseld for a one-on-one interview. We talked about his learning experience in making the short film, bringing inanimate faces in the cityscape to life, giving each character personality, the use of colors in the film and his favorite creation. Hit the jump for the full interview. Question: From the experience of directing this short, what were some things you learned from a technical aspect that you think you can apply to your work going forward? And what were some creative things you learned from this experience? SASCHKA UNSELD: For me, it was a very interesting experience directing for a big company like this because, before, it was so different when you’re just a small group of people. And we’re a small group of people in our feature, but I always compared it with, we used the production pipeline of a feature studio for a short is kind of like, what you wanna do is just grocery shop around the corner but you have to take this aircraft carrier that takes 100 people to just start up. And that’s kind of how it felt sometimes. Because features take so much work and even the shorts take a lot of work, things are split up into a million different pieces at ... ...

New Concept Art Released for Pixar’s ‘The Blue Umbrella’

This week, a new interview with filmmaker Saschka Unseld and IndieWire.com brought us some new information about the innovative short, as well as some new pieces of concept art. The Blue Umbrella tells the story of two umbrellas — one red, one Blue — who fall in love on a rainy night. The short is incredibly innovative in that it uses a photorealistic style that is new to animation, making the CGI animation look as if the film were live-action. About the decision to animate the story over shooting it live, Unseld commented to Indie Wire’s Animation Scoop blog: “We initially thought about shooting live action, but if you start to go down that road in your head, shutting down a downtown city block with dozens of cars and extras and people with umbrellas and making it rain, and then trying to control that, you don’t want to do that. We built all the shots in the computer and then in editorial we re-recorded shots with a separate camera capture unit for a hand-held look.” In addition to the two lead umbrellas, The Blue Umbrella will also bring the city itself to life, and this animation was a challenging part of the short’s production. Unseld explains: “Finding faces above height was important to get the vantage point of the umbrellas and not having them all ...

Source: billdesowitz.com --- Saturday, May 04, 2013
<img src="http://billdesowitz.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Umbrella_ColorScript_Panel08_upres.jpg" & width="150" & height="63" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />By sheer coincidence, while Disney was in a romantic mood for its Oscar-winning Paperman hybrid breakthrough, Pixar was getting blissed out over its photographic love story between a Blue and red Umbrella. But of course Pixar is all about using its shorts as a testing ground, and the stunning global illumination tryout from The Blue Umbrella , which beamed on every object with real-world believability, also shined on Monsters University (which open together June 21st). The great thing about The Blue Umbrella , though, is that it’s a new kind of enchantment for Pixar. Imagine animating The Umbrellas of Cherbourg from the umbrellas’ point of view, only the city comes alive at night in a symphony of rain with expressive faces everywhere (from buildings to windows to street signs to lamp posts to traffic signals), bolstered by a lovely score by Jon Brion ( Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ). It all began for technical director Saschka Unseld ( Brave , Toy Story 3 ) when he got depressed seeing a discarded Umbrella in a San Francisco gutter. One thing led to another and suddenly the German animator and Filmakademie alum was directing Pixar’s first live action-looking work, inspired by the intense use of color in Black Narcissus and the neon lyricism of Chungking Express . But The Blue Umbrella possesses an urban aesthetic all its own with dramatic use of shadows and shallow depth of field as if foreground objects were photographe ...

As director Saschka Unseld reveals in a new interview with Indiewire’s Animation Scoop , this photorealism was a very deliberate choice. In fact, the team at Pixar even considered employing live action at one point; but, as Unseld explains, " if you start to go down that road in your head, shutting down a downtown city block with dozens of cars and extras and people with umbrellas and making it rain, and then trying to control that, you don’t want to do that. " Sticking to CG opened up a whole new can of worms, though: just how do you convincingly mimic reality in a virtual space? This is just one of the challenges touched upon in Animation Scoop’s insightful interview . As this new concept art shows, though, it was an equally important task to maintain visual clarity and bold color among the realistic detail. We’ll see if Pixar delivers when their latest short arrives with Monsters University on June 21. Your thoughts? ...

Well, today brings us a reinvigorated look at the short with some additional details and new concept art. Director, Saschka Unseld recently talked with Bill Desowitz at Indiewire about the short's photorealistic look as well as the shallow depth of field and dark colors that give the film it's signature look. A few of the discussion areas were discussed in our interview with Unseld in early March ( read the transcript of our interview here or listen to the full audio interview on episode 007 of our podcast ), but there were other insights that Unseld discussed with Indiewire that are really enlightening to the process - oh, and don't forget the beautiful concept art as well! Image © Pixar Animation Studios - courtesy of Indiewire Blog I think the line in the interview that struck me most was when Desowitz says, " The city has a lived-in quality that's out of the past yet still timeless ". This really hit me because after viewing the short, this is what I felt as well, but wasn't quite able to put it into words properly. I also really enjoyed the discussion about the potential of shooting the introduction of the short as live-action rather using comp ...

The film's director Saschka Unseld took a few moments to joins us for a roundtable interview. There, he talked about the short film's photo-realistic animation, his experience working on previous animated films, writing a happy ending versus having an "arthouse film" ending, his cinematic influences, the importance of music in the piece and more. Hit the jump for the full interview. Question: So, we were told that was absolutely no live action. Saschka Unseld: So, I was told, too. [Laughs] There’s no live action. That’s amazing. Unseld: Sadly, I had nothing - I mean I had something to do with it that I asked people to do it, but the thing that took me a while to get used to is that I don’t -- as Director I don’t do any hands-on work. So, ultimately I always feel like just humble towards the team that they were able to do it and I just asked them to do it. Actually initially we were thinking about maybe shooting some parts of it, but then during my film studies I shot live action … directed live-action films and did some commercials, and if you would just start to go down that route in your head of shutting down this downtown city block, filling it with dozens of cars, and ... ...
