Source: losangeles.cbslocal.com --- Friday, May 24, 2013
SAN CLEMENTE (CBSLA.com) — One local woman is on a mission to figure out who previously owned a Bible she recently purchased from a San Clemente bookstore. That’s because 75-year-old Marion Shurtleff says she discovered a childhood essay she had written tucked away inside. “I call it my OMG story … my Oh my God,” Shurtleff said. She told CBS2′s Stacey Butler that five months ago she walked into a tiny new and used bookstore and bought the used Bible. “I thought a while that I’d like to have another Bible to compare with my Bible that I had to see how the verses changed,” she said. “I flipped through it. I liked it.” When she took it home, she noticed a yellowed folded letter inside. “And a couple times, I opened the Bible and I looked at this side and I looked at the other side,” she said. Two months went by before Shurtleff took a closer look. “And then I opened it up, and instantly I saw my name,” she explained. “I recognized my handwriting. I hollered. I started shaking. I cried. I had goose bumps.” Slipped in between the pages was an essay that Shurtleff wrote 65 years ago to earn her merit badge for Girl Scouts. It read in part, “Be kind to animals. Do not pick flowers. Don’t walk on the grass.” Shurtleff says she wrote that letter in her hometown of Covington, Kentucky more than 2,000 miles away. “How did it get here? I think there’s got to be a tie to the person who kept this. Why would they keep it,” she wonders. “Maybe i ...

In that community, he is an elder statesman who has garnered respect and credibility. That gravitas is coming in handy with the launch of his new book, “Heaven Vision: Glimpses of Glory,” based in part on his own near-death experience following a heart attack two years ago. “I never thought it would happen to me because I’m in such good shape,” he recalls today. “As they say, God’s got a sense of humor!” As if the experience itself isn’t amazing enough, the “genesis” of the project is also unusual, as James recounts. “To be honest, I’d never thought much about this subject of near-death experiences. I did know this: because of what I do, my mother (90) and aunt (85) wanted me to write a book about heaven,” James explained. “I started thinking about it, and the Lord put on my heart to do it. One of the hot button topics is near-death experiences – afterlife stuff. Christians, too, always are interested in this.” James’ area of expertise, Bible prophecy, would have to play a part, he knew. Still, it was a project he planned to take slow as the last days of 2010 ran out. “Yes, it needed to have some kind of eschatological slant, because that’s what I do,” James told WND. “So one morning, I’m walking around with coffee in my hand, thinking about this. I knew I would have to be careful with it because of wild speculations that usua ...

Alice writes: “Please continue to insist that Senators Ayotte, Graham, Collins, and McCain apologize to Susan Rice.” Rev’s response: “That’s a great point Alice, not quite a question, but I’m gonna stay on it because I think what they did to Susan Rice was not only wrong and bad to her, it was bad for the country, and they should stand up and acknowledge it with an apology .” Cee writes: “I love your fresh perspective and your constant quest for truth. As a white, middle-class liberal, who is registered as an independent, my question is: who do you attribute your sense of humor to? Your spin on the reality of politics never fails to amuse me, but also wows me with its accuracy.” Rev’s response: “I learned very early in my public career as an activist, don’t take yourself more seriously than the cause. Laugh at yourself. Laugh at what goes on, and try to reach people with a sense of humor so they understand it’s not about you, it’s about the cause. you can in many ways deface yourself to keep your cause out front.” Steve asks: “What’s your favorite scripture verse?” Rev’s response: “It’s from the book of St. John, Chapter 14, verse 1. ‘Let not your heart be trouble, ye believe in God, believe also in me.’ I have many verses I love, I love the 37th Psalm, the 71st Psalm a lot. That it comes as no surprise is a reflection of the state of affairs Jones seeks to alter by his new exegesis. Forty-odd years ago, when he arrived at University College London's Galton Laboratory, he was accosted by a Christian zealot who later took to shouting in the corridors about the Saviour. It was a prophetic kind of encounter. In those days science and religion generally made way for each other. Nowadays they can't seem to help but step into each other's paths. ...

Sort of. After our story ran, we received word from Northpoint Bible College in Haverhill — the No. 1-ranked school on our list with a perfect 100 percent 4-year graduation rate — that its track record is something less than divine. It turns out the college miscalculated the grad rates it previously reported… ...

Keller argues that we have to view our work through the larger Biblical story of Creation > Fall > Redemption > Restoration . If God is the creator of all things, and if through Christ all things are made new , that process of restoration must include our work. We would bowl on evening leagues, and I had the privilege of bowling on a Saturday morning youth league. Our team was so good. We were never challenged for last place, but we always had fun!Being young it seemed I could never find a “house ball” to fit my hands, and I could never keep a constant average. I got to keep the ball. I continued to bowl, even clo ...
