The British Soap Awards are a lot more fun than the Baftas

Source: www.guardian.co.uk --- Monday, May 20, 2013
The BAFTAS might have more respectability and the Oscars more star wattage, but it's hard not to get swept up in the sheer exuberance of this great night out for the soap stars Something happened during the British Soap Awards last night. Something weird. Something that you probably wouldn't see on many other awards shows. Chris Noth, formerly of Sex and the City, had been hired to present an award. Phillip Schofield announced his name. And everyone went berserk. Jessie Wallace started lolling about her seat, her jaw dangling several feet below the rest of her face and her eyeballs cartwheeling insanely in their sockets. Another actor stood up and bellowed "I love you!" with all the mad-eyed ferocity of a crackpot Jeremy Kyle guest. His name alone was enough to prompt an audible intake of breath from the audience. And this was Chris Noth, for crying out loud. If they got that excited about the fifth lead of a show that hasn't been on TV for almost a decade, imagine what they'd have done in the presence of an actual celebrity. There might have been a full-on riot. This, in a nutshell, is what's so great about the British Soap Awards. The BAFTAS might have more respectability, and the Oscars more star wattage, but you'd be hard pressed to find an awards ceremony that's as much of an out-and-out lark. This year in particular should have been a tremendous downer – nobody watches EastEnders any more and Coronation Street has become so ...

Some of the big winners were shocks, but in reality, we were all just watching for the fashion! Although there was no theme for this year’s event, the guests seemed to have followed one: fashion through the ages. Alexandra Roach looked demure in a ‘50s-style prom dress with spaghetti straps in navy, a look that could have come from the wardrobe of our favourite New Girl, Zooey Deschanel. The actress sported a blunt fringe, lashings of mascara and minimal accessories. At the other end of the ‘50s spectrum, Pussycat Doll and television presenter Kimberley Wyatt channelled Marilyn Monroe with a blow-out worthy of the silver-screen siren. Dripping in diamonds, the blonde bombshell looked every inch the glamour puss in a Biba one-shouldered, floor-length champagne gown. Paying homage to the ‘80s, was ‘Leading Actress’ BAFTA award winner, Sheridan Smith in a mullet-inspired dress. The simple LBD had a half-skirt attached at the waist that made the look really pop. Teamed with skyscraper heels, red lips and a perfect ‘up’ do, the actress certainly looked the part. Missing out on the same award was Sienna Miller, who arrived at the event with her sister Savannah. Both looked relaxed with Sienna opting for a reserved outfit of a light-blue lace, skater-style dress reminiscent o ...

Olivia Colman , for example, (finally) won two awards, for entirely contrasting jobs. Supporting actress for her tear-stained role in the gang-battling drama Accused , and female comedy performer for Twenty Twelve . Her first speech, for the former, is a thing of wonder and delight: Then there was Ben Whishaw , who won leading actor for his performance of Richard II , in Sam Mendes’s collection of Shakespeare history plays The Hollow Crown . And from the same production, Simon Russell-Beale’s Falstaff won in the supporting actor category, specifically from Henry IV Part II . Graham Norton, who hosted the event, also won a prize. The Graham Norton Show won in the entertainment category, because it’s entertaining. Game Of Thrones won the Radio Times audience award, the only trophy to be voted on by viewers. And, having posted Daleks on the red carpet, BAFTA paid tribute to 50 years of Doctor Who , with this clip collection, that features a beautiful little cameo twisty thing at the end: And while we’re looking at speeches, Sheridan Smith appeared to suddenly implode when she won the supporting actress trophy for her part in Mrs Briggs . Either her ghast was genuinely flabbered or she really IS that good an actress, cos this ...

However, with loose updos and natural, wavy textures, a very British sense of understatement was evident at last night's award ceremony, which took place at London's Royal Festival Hall. Made in Chelsea star Binky Felstead opted for mussed-up waves on the red carpet. Doctor Who's new sidekick Jenna Louise Coleman wore a pretty half-up half-down style. Jennie McAlpine kept grinning despite an attack of the frizz on her centre-parted updo (cheers rain). A face-framing updo left TV presenter Laura Whitmore looking lovely... ...while fellow blonde beauty Sienna Miller opted for a similarly low-key style. The night's biggest winner, actress Olivia Coleman, kept her short hair loosely-textured - a good call given the weather! ...
