The information comes from search warrants unsealed at the direction of the judge overseeing the case against Holmes, who could be executed if convicted of the 20 July 2012 Shooting in Aurora, Colorado . The warrants show that in the hours after the attack, investigators wanted to search Holmes' bank records and an iPod Touch. They found that Holmes had received ammunition from the website BulkAmmo.com at his apartment in Aurora. Authorities wanted to determine whether he had received other material at the nearby University of Colorado, Denver, where he had been a neuroscience graduate student, or at his parents' home near San Diego. Detectives also wrote that on 9 July, Holmes downloaded a US Postal Service form to track shipments. That was around the time Holmes shipped a notebook and burnt $20 bills to his former psychiatrist at the university. That package was not found until after the Shooting. The notebook's contents have not yet been disclosed. The documents released on Wednesday did not show what investigators found. They did say that Holmes carried an iPhone t ...

Would we be ready? Monday night, local emergency responders found out from someone who's been there. It started out as a typical night in the E.R. "Just a normal Thursday night," said Dr. Comilla Sasson, an emergency room physician at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora. Until a gunman opened fire on a dark, crowded movie theater. "All we got was the notification that said, 'Shooting, let the hospitals know we're coming.' And that was the entire notification that we got," she said. "We literally had one ambulance that night and nine police cars that brought 23 patients." She said the wounds were similar to a war zone. "We had people literally with their entire bellies open, with intestines hanging out," said Sasson. Sasson hopes others can learn from the tragedy. Monday night, she spoke to doctors and first responders at Lehigh Valley Hospital. She asked what they would do if a mass shooter hit Dorney Park. "Just to give our experiences of what we learned in Aurora, and hopefully, learn a little bit from what you guys are doing," she said. As for her own experience, Sasson is nearing Aurora's one year anniversary. "You work on instinct, you work on adrenaline, and I think it wasn't until about 3 p.m. that following day when all of a sudden I kind of took a step back and went, 'Oh my gosh, what in the world just happened?'"she said. Sasson actually trave ...

Source: coloradopols.com --- Tuesday, May 14, 2013
An extraordinary confrontation occurred today between the father of a victim of the Aurora Shooting last summer, and GOP Colorado Senate Minority Leader Bill Cadman of Colorado Springs. If you were one of the dozen or so in the audience today at the Denver Post's wrapup discussion panel with Cadman and House Minority Leader Mark Waller , or the somewhat larger audience watching online, most of the hour-long discussion was uninspiring boilerplate and complaints you've heard many times. Republicans aren't happy with the results of this year's session. 46:00 into the discussion, Rep. Waller does get in an amusing quip about how he has no more control over crazies in his party than "Democrats do over what goes up on Colorado Pols." Touche! And then, as the very last question of the panel, this happened. Transcript: TOM SULLIVAN: Gentlemen, this is my first time down at the, uh, up in the Gallery, to watch you guys work since my time at Metro State. And I have to tell you, I was kind of appalled at with what, with some of the things that I saw down there, the levity in which our elected officials conduct themselves down on the floor. And, I uh specifically, you know with the GOP now as being labeled as a party of "Guns over People" Party. You must be very proud of that. I sat up there and listened to the stories about, you know the fictitious stories about Boy Scouts, and Canadian missionaries, moving around… VINCE CARROLL: There's g ...

Source: www.guardiannews.com --- Monday, May 13, 2013
Attorneys say they have diagnosis for Holmes, who is charged over movie theatre attack that killed 12 and injured 70 The suspect in the Aurora Shooting on Monday asked a judge to enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. The move is widely seen as James Holmes' best hope of avoiding the death penalty. Holmes is charged with murder and attempted murder in an attack on a movie theater in Colorado, on 20 July 2012, that killed 12 and injured 70 . Attorney Daniel King made the request in court, saying attorneys now have a diagnosis for James Holmes. He didn't specify what it was. The judge said he would consider arguments first about constitutional questions the defense has raised about Colorado's insanity law. He was expected to decide whether to accept a new plea sometime before a 31 May hearing. Holmes had bushy hair and beard at Monday's hearing. He did not speak at all. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty . They say Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, spent months acquiring weapons and ammunition, scouting a movie theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora and booby-trapping his apartment. On 20 July, dressed in a police-style helmet and body armor, he opened fire during a packed midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, prosecutors say. No motive has emerged in nearly 10 months of hearings, but Holmes' attorneys have repeatedly said their client is mentally ill.

Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- Monday, May 13, 2013
DENVER — The long journey toward a verdict in the deadly Colorado theater shootings enters a new and critical phase Monday when suspect James Holmes asks a judge to change his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. The plea is widely seen as Holmes' best hope, and perhaps his only hope, of avoiding the death penalty. But his lawyers have held off until now, fearing a wrinkle in the law could cripple their ability to raise his mental health as a mitigating factor during the sentencing phase. Two judges have refused to rule on the constitutionality of the law, saying the attorneys' objections were hypothetical because Holmes had not pleaded insanity. The defense had little choice but to have Holmes enter the plea and then challenge the law. Holmes' lawyers announced last week that Holmes would ask to change his plea at Monday's hearing. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. They say Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, spent months acquiring weapons and ammunition, scouting a theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora and booby-trapping his apartment. Then on July 20, dressed in a police-style helmet and body armor, he opened fire during a packed midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," prosecutors say. Twelve people died and 70 were injured. Of course he’s mentally insane. He shot up a movie theater, killing adults and young children. It’s just a question of whether or not he should be executed or given life in prison. Last year on July 20, Holmes is believed to have shot and killed 12 people and injured 70 during a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colorado. Mass shooters of this caliber often take their own lives at the end of their killing sprees and seldom face rotting in prison afterwards, so a trial like this one isn’t too common. In March, Judge William Sylvester denied Holmes’ attorney’s request for more time to build an insanity defense and enter a plea of not guilty on his behalf. It April, the Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler announced that the prosecution is seeking the death penalty for the 25-year-old. “In this case, for James Egan Holmes, justice is death,” George said. He faces 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder. Holmes will also face charges for having explosive devices. [ NBC ] ...

Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- Wednesday, May 08, 2013
DENVER -- The trial of the former grad student charged in the deadly Colorado movie theater shootings will likely be delayed weeks or months because he wants to change his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. James Holmes' attorneys filed the court papers Tuesday. The judge handling the case will hear arguments from the defense and prosecutors about the request Monday. If the judge accepts the plea, Holmes would be sent to the state mental hospital where doctors would determine whether he was sane at the time of the shootings. If he's found to be insane, a jury still could find him guilty. Tom Sullivan, whose son, Alex, was killed in the attack, said prosecutors have warned victims that an insanity plea would delay the case. "We're just mortified that this is the process that we're going through, and we still have a long way to go," Sullivan said Tuesday. "I know justice will win out in the end." Holmes, 25, is charged with more than 160 counts of murder and attempted murder in the July 20 attack in Aurora that killed 12 people and left 70 wounded or injured. Prosecutors said Holmes spent months buying guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition, donned police-style body armor and opened fire during a midnight screening of the latest Batman movie. Prosecutors announced last month they would seek the death penalty at the trial now scheduled to start Feb. 3.
