The Grand Challenge strategy calls on other federal agencies, U. S. industry, academia and citizen scientists as well as their international counterparts to rally around an ambitious attempt to complete the cataloguing of asteroids that pose a collision threat to the Earth and demonstrating a deflection strategy. “We want to prove that we are in fact smarter than the dinosaurs,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver, who helped to open the half-day conference that featured a range of NASA experts on the topic. Well, pull up an electron or three and check out these mindbenders… * There may be killer asteroids headed for Earth, and NASA has decided to do something about it . The space agency announced a new “Grand Challenge” Tuesday to find all dangerous space rocks and figure out how to stop them from destroying Earth. The new mission builds on projects already underway at NASA, including a plan to capture an Asteroid , pull it in toward the moon and send astronauts to visit it. As part of the Grand Challenge, the agency issued a “request for information” to solicit ideas from industry, academia and the public on how to improve the Asteroid mission plan. * Yahoo is the latest tech company to release new details on U.S. government data requests. The Internet giant joins Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft in attempts to provide more transparency following allegations that the National Security Agency (NSA) had direct access to its servers . * Google has asked the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to lift a gag order, saying it has the constitutional right to clear its name by discussing government data requests . The company filed a five-page motion before the court on Tuesday afternoon, arguing it has “a right under the First Amendment to publish” summary statistics about requests made under the Foreign Intel ...

Source: gigaom.com --- Tuesday, June 18, 2013
NASA officials are planning to monitor all asteroids that pass near Earth, they announced Tuesday, an ambitious effort that will need international collaboration between government organizations, private companies, universities and citizens. The space agency currently spots 95 percent of near-Earth asteroids larger than 3,280 feet across. They detect less than 1 percent of asteroids smaller than 328 feet. The new plan calls for tracking any rock large enough to damage human civilization, including those less than 33 feet wide. That would catch objects like the 56-foot meteor that exploded over Russia in February. The agency would also collect thorough information on asteroids’ size, composition, spin and surface properties. NASA would deflect any Earth-bound asteroids larger than 328 feet. How NASA will do this isn’t yet known. As of Tuesday, officials are soliciting information on how to best track, deflect and capture asteroids. Past research suggests a nuclear explosion or being hit by a spacecraft could shift an Asteroid’s course. A spacecraft could also capture one with a bag . Back in March, NASA and the House of Representatives Science Committee had a tense conversation about current Asteroid efforts, when NASA Chief Chris Bolden chastised the government for not providing enough funding after Congress accused NASA of not being prepared for an incident like the Russian meteor. The 2005 NASA Authorization Act requires the ag ...
