Award ticket surcharge arbitrage: Aussie style

Source: boardingarea.com --- Wednesday, May 22, 2013
Want to save hundreds of dollars in fuel surcharges on Qantas award flights between Australia and Europe? Turns out it is a trivial task. Photo from the Qantas/Emirates flyover of Sydney Harbour courtesy of Qantas Thanks to the recent partnership between Qantas and Emirates has created a number of interesting Arbitrage opportunities for members of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. Included in that is a sizable gap in the fuel surcharge the two carriers levy for similar trips : Travellers wanting to fly economy from Australia to London return have been able to escape paying $610 in fuel surcharges by redeeming their frequent-flyer points on an Emirates flight rather than Qantas. … A passenger flying one-way in economy or business on Qantas from Australia to Europe has to pay $380 in fuel surcharges, while on a flight to the US it is $340 and to Asia $175. In contrast, Emirates charges $75 in fuel surcharges for a one-way economy ticket to Europe, and $30 to Asia. For business class, the surcharge for Europe is $230 and for Asia $165. And the part where Qantas made searching for Emirates award seats incredibly easy by integrating such into their online award booking engine isn’t hurting the situation either. The bad news for customers is that the two carriers are set to meet in the coming weeks to discuss this issue, among other things. Apparently they recognize the issues they’ve created for themselves. Of course, this is not the ...

Explaining Inscription Arbitrage (Glypher to 80!)

Source: theunderminejournal.com --- Monday, May 20, 2013
From WTBGold I think I can officially say that I'm an altoholic now. Funny thing is, I've only ever considered myself to have had one toon, my warrior. I leveled my bear when I found out about the JC/Enchanting shuffle, and he got raid geared somehow. And today, got my priest to 80 finally after discovering inscription Arbitrage a while back. But I officially have 3 toons over 80! :) C'mon...she's a Draenei, how was I supposed to xmog her? Oh what was that, you ask? What is inscription Arbitrage? Well, Arbitrage is just a fancy word for taking money and making more money with zero risk. Buying low and selling high on the AH (or the stock market) is not Arbitrage because there is risk involved: prices can fall, people might not buy, or you might repost so many times that posting fees are more than your profit. However, an example of Arbitrage is finding something on the AH that vendors for more that you could buy it for. In short, it means absolutely zero-risk profit, however minimal that profit is. Auctioneer has a search function for this (oddly it's not the one titled "Arbitrage;" that tool is for cross-faction trading, which is not true Arbitrage. It's the "Vendor" one. Read More.. ...

You adapt! I have been reading about the notion that Google was breaking it’s paid search Arbitrage rules as far back as the Fall of 2012. We noticed some unusual activity around the prominence of Ask.com listings throughout the paid search results that in essence created an opportunity for Google to double-serve ads and control more of that very valuable “above the fold” shelf space. A good article about it appeared in SearchEngineLand http://searchengineland.com/is-ask-com-continuing-to-play-the-google-Arbitrage-game-137278 that spoke to this topic. At the time, I felt the concern was perhaps a bit overstated and the notion that Google was going to influence results for one of their search partners seemed a bit far fetched. Flash forward to May of 2013 and we are seeing this sort of activity intensify to a grander scale. If you read through the Google terms and conditions related to this sort of activity, it clearly violates their own language around this sort of practice. What can be done? Essentially nothing that will rectify any sort of immediate resolution and the best course of action is to adapt to this change. We have begun to adjust many accounts away from the partner network on paid search in hopes to keep more of a focused scenario on Google’s main driver of their own search engine. People have become all u ...
