Following on from multiple rumors suggesting that Apple will be launching a smartwatch device near the end of 2013, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that the so called ‘IWatch’ will not debut until the second half of 2014 at the earliest (via MacRumors ). The analyst, who has repeatedly demonstrated accurate knowledge of unreleased Apple products in the past, suggested that due to issues developing both hardware and software for the device, production will not start until after mid-2014, placing release of the device in the second half of next year. The IWatch is rumored to sport a 2 inch display that will incorporate a key number of features over and above that offered by the iPod nano with a watch strap attachment. Some of these features have been suggested to be biometric-related and will likely be targeted and the sports, fitness and health areas. The device is expected to run some form of iOS software but it’s not clear how much functionality Apple is looking to offer, particularly given the expectations of the public on battery life. We thought that 2013 was going to be the year of the smart watch, spurred on by products like the Pebble. We thought that Apple’s foray into the smart watch arena would also be this year, but it now sounds like the so-called IWatch won’t be introduced until late next year. Will it be worth the wait? While the exact specs and features are still totally up in the air, the latest rumor says that Apple’s IWatch will come with some interesting biometric technology. Indeed, according KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, biometrics could play a big part in Apple’s invasion of your wrist. This is for both security and health tracking. The prediction lines up with the fact that Apple bought biometric sensor company AuthenTec last year. Given the rise in popularity of devices like the Nike Fuelband, Fitbit and Jawbone Up, it makes a lot of sense that Apple also wants to capitalize on this biometric fad too. As far as the other rumors go, Kuo also says that the IWatch will have a 1.5 to 2-inch display, but earlier reports also indicated that this could be the first Apple device to utilize flexible display technology too. Although Apple fans worldwide are waiting for the rumored Apple smart watch, we now hear that the device will not release until late 2014. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been quoted as saying by Apple Insider that the rumored IWatch will debut only in the second half of 2014. He also added that the device might be facing few hardware and software issues, and that could be the reason for the delay. Kuo has suggested that components in the wearable devices haven’t matured. Also, Apple may have not adequate resources to develop an IWatch version of iOS, because the company have to put its efforts to make big changes in its iPhone and iPad iOS this year. Because of all these reasons, the mass production of IWatch will begin only next year. Kuo has also been quoted as saying that the IWatch will use a 1.5 to 2.0-inch display and will follow the features of the iPod nano, particularly its processor and the touch technology. Apple’s unannounced “IWatch” may be out sooner than most of us expect it, as reports from Japan’s Macotakara and Taiwanese site Economic Daily News suggest that the Cupertino, Calif. company is in the process of testing 1.5-inch OLED screens for the wearable, connected device. Foxconn was also mentioned by the latter site as the company to manufacture trial “IWatch” batches. Just like many other tech and tech industry sites purportedly close to Apple’s supply chain, both Macotakara and Economic Daily News have a “hit-or-miss” reputation in terms of accuracy. Still, if the rumors are accurate, the IWatch may not be too far away as earlier thought. Macotakara’s report claims that the first batch of OLED panels tested measured 1.8 inches, but when it was determined that that was too large, Apple opted for 1.5-inch displays instead. The site added that Apple is considering Taiwanese company RiTdisplay to manufacture the touchscreen panels, which would mark the first time Apple would use OLED technology on one of its consumer electronics products. That is, of course, assuming the report is accurate. Apple is reportedly already testing its first smart watch, frequently dubbed the IWatch, and it has a 1.5-inch OLED display according to fresh reports from Economic Times . RiTdisplay has reportedly been tapped to provide the screens and touch sensors for the device. Apparently Apple had to settle on the 1.5-inch screen after it decided that a 1.8-inch display was too big for most wrists. Foxconn is building the device and has already received an order for 1,000 units, Economic Times said. A separate report from Bloomberg in March suggested that more than 100 Apple employees were assigned to develop the IWatch and that the wearable computer will launch this year.
