If he goes away due to his supposed ties with Biogenesis, possibly have his gargantuan 10-year, $275 million contract voided. However, in the smaller picture, where the 2013 Yankees are still trying to achieve their never-ending goal of winning a World Series, Yankees supporters have to ask whether they’d have the washed-up version of A-Rod hitting fifth or Thomas Neal . Neal hit fifth in both games of the day-night doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers , another example of the desperation the Yankees have felt due to significant injuries to key players. The chances that A-Rod, assuming Major League Baseball does not suspend him, has a successful return to the lineup are incredibly slim. He is 38-years-old and coming off his second major hip surgery in four years. Although, the Yankees did learn that Kevin Youkilis , who was signed to be A-Rod’s temporary replacement this season, will be out at least 10-12 weeks with a herniated disk in his back, putting the rest of his season in jeopardy. Plus, Mark Teixeira has landed back on the DL after reaggravating the same wrist injury that put him out the first two months of the year. Of course, Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson ar ...

They have yet to talk to Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez , but that could be coming. It's unknown who they'll be able to suspend or if anything will happen at all, but according to Jon Heyman : MLB officials believe the league's Joint Drug Agreement may allow it to announce suspensions before any appeal process in this case since the names have already surfaced publicly. The players union position is that any suspension, as well as the announcement of suspensions, should be stayed until the appeal process is complete. That is where the debate stands, but where do the Yankees stand? Kevin Youkilis will be out until September and that leaves the team with David Adams and Jayson Nix . The two of them have combined for 0.5 WAR this season and the Yankees have gotten -0.1 WAR of production from the position; the seventh worst in baseball. It's clear that they need an upgrade at the postion, but the only way to do that is to make a trade. Too bad Brian Cashman is content on standing pat: Cashman says for the moment they wont look to acquire a new 3rd baseman, will wait for ARod's return. — Daniel Barbarisi (@DanBarbarisi) June 18, 2013 Not only are they waiting around for a soon-to-be 38-year-old to come back from his second hip surgery, but he could also be suspended and, if MLB is still aiming for 100-game suspensi ...

With Injuries Piling Up, Is Alex Rodriguez Now the Yankees' Savior?

I can't help but imagine that Alex Rodriguez is out there somewhere, saying that very thing with a wry smile on his face. He has to know that the New York Yankees are going through some hard times. This has cast a new light on his road back from a January hip operation. The Yankees suddenly have a strong need for A-Rod. In case you're just now crawling out from underneath a rock, Tuesday has been injury central in the Bronx. Yanks general manager Brian Cashman hinted to Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com and other reporters on Monday that first baseman Mark Teixeira could end up back on the disabled list after aggravating his right wrist, and the club made the move official on Tuesday. On top of that, Bryan Hoch of MLB .com reported that third baseman Kevin Youkilis is also going on the DL, and he's guaranteed to be out for as long as three months: Youk's season may have just come to an end. If so, there goes $12 million down the drain on a guy who played in 28 games and posted a .219/.305/.343 line with two home runs. There's a chance that Teixeira's season could also be over. Cashman did not rule out the possibility of him needing season-ending surgery to repair his wrist, and Bleacher Report's Will Carroll wrote on Tuesday that Tex appears headed in that direction. If Teixeira does need surgery, it would cost him six months. That would mean another $23.125 million down the drain on a guy who hit .151/.27 ...

While it will be quite some time before he's able to face a pitch at the Major League level, A-Rod will take a big step in his recovery on Tuesday when he faces live pitching for the first time since undergoing hip surgery in January. Having ran the bases at 75 percent over the weekend, the fact that Rodriguez is now cleared to face live pitching indicates that his base running went as planned and he experienced no setbacks. If A-Rod is able to continue his rehab with no complications, it appears that he will be ready to join the Yankees shortly after the All-Star break. Rodriguez is coming off a season in which he missed the All-Star game for the first time since 1995, when he was 19 years old. He batted .272 with 18 home runs, 57 RBI, and 74 runs scored. Although we're long past the days of A-Rod playing like one of the greatest baseball players of all-time, the Yankees could still use his bat in their lineup. Kevin Youkilis has been the Yankees' primary third baseman this season, but is batting just .219 through 28 games. The designated hitter spot - which is more likely the role that Rodriguez will fill - has been an issue for the Yankees as well. Though Travis Hafner got off to a good start this season, he has batted just .127 over his past 19 games, and his average is down to .221. Although Yankee fans are completely fed up with Rodrigu ...

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Friday, June 14, 2013
Teams around baseball's major leagues have a lot of money—like a lot of money. When you start to look at some of the outrageous contracts handed out to superstar players, you can see that the owners have a bunch of dough kicking around, and ample will to spend it. Well, the "have" teams do at any rate, b ut do they spend it wisely? According to spotrac .com , the top-10 wage-earners in the majors right now are all pulling down in excess of $21 million, and that doesn't include all of the endorsement and appearance fees they generate away from the diamond. Sadly, the guys pulling down all this money are, more often than not, players whose best years are behind them. But that seems to be the reality of MLB contract negotiations. Players who have just played the best years of their careers command the most money, even if the odds are stacked against them in being able to continue to perform at that level due to steadily advancing age. Teams willing to spend big bucks on blue-chip talent are therefore often paying for past performance, not what they're actually going to get for their money. Let's look at the 10 highest-paid MLB players of 2013 and see if they're actually earning their keep this season. Begin Slideshow ...

That’s not because I think Braun deserves to have his name dragged through the mud again — as someone who enjoys watching the most skilled players in the game do what they do best, I certainly don’t want Braun to sit out for 50 or 100 games, and while I’m all for suspending athletes who break the rules, I don’t think it’s fair to throw out those rules whenever they deliver an outcome you don’t like. ...

However, it sounds like the Yankees were approached by a Japanese baseball team in the off-season about potentially obtaining Rodriguez according to Ken Belson of the New York Times : “Last November, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks reached out to the Yankees through an intermediary and expressed interest in obtaining Rodriguez, according to two baseball officials who were told of the informal inquiry. The Yankees never engaged the Hawks in discussions because they knew it could not work for two obvious reasons.” The two reasons that a deal would never be able to be reached is for starters Rodriguez has a full no-trade clause and secondly, he underwent hip surgery that has sidelined him for the duration of the season. Going into this season, Rodriguez had five years and $114 million left on his contract and hasn’t played in a single game for the Yankees this season. With most of their stars injured, the Yankees have been one of the surprise teams in baseball as they’re 37-26 and find themselves only 1.5 behind first-place Boston. Not to mention, Rodriguez is one of the pre-eminent targets of major league baseball’s investigation and commissioner Bud Selig is looking potentially suspend Rodriguez and Brewers star Ryan Braun 100 ...

According to the New York Times, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Japan's NPB reached out to the Yankees last November and made their interest in acquiring Rodriguez known. Rodriguez might actually make sense for the Hawks, who already lead NPB in attendance. As the Times puts it, "m ost parent companies in Japan consider their teams promotional vehicles for their brands, and many are willing to lose tens of millions of dollars a year for the privilege." Fukuoka is owned by the second-richest man in Japan, who retains that title despite having lost $70 billion when the dot-com bubble burst. A-Rod could be the ultimate loss leader. It wasn't close to actually happening. Rodriguez would have to be healthy, which he wasn't and isn't. He'd have to not be embroiled in a PED scandal, which he always is. He'd have to be willing to give up the New York and Miami nightlife for Fukuoka's Hakata Gion Yamakasa, which...maybe? But somewhere, parallel universe Brian Cashman is preparing to throw $15 million a year at Kyle Seager. [ NY Times ] ...

Alex Rodriguez: New York Yankees Are Stuck with Overpaid Star No Matter What

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Monday, June 10, 2013
Every New York Yankees fan can agree on one thing: Alex Rodriguez needs to go. While that is the overwhelming opinion of most in the Bombers' universe, there isn't a chance it's going to happen anytime soon. With the exception of the 2009 playoffs in which A-Rod had a monstrous showing that led to a Yankee World Series run, the third baseman has been nothing short of a major headache for the organization, whether it be news about his numerous girlfriends or the ever-evolving case against him in the performance-enhancing drugs department. The only way the Yanks can rid themselves of the annoyance that is A-Rod is to have the troubled star retire. That's right, not even a suspension for PEDs will keep A-Rod away for good, per Wallace Matthews and Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork .com. According to two baseball sources -- one of whom is familiar with the wording of Rodriguez's contract -- even if it is proved that Rodriguez received PEDs and HGH from Bosch, the Yankees would not be able to impose a punishment greater than the mandatory 50-game suspension stipulated for a first-time offender by baseball's collectively bargained Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. "Baseball's drug policy was specifically written so that teams can't do things like this," one of the sources said. "You can't use this to try to get out of the last years of a contract." Major League Baseball is currently trying to build a case against several player ...
