The victory went to Alex Cobb (5-2, 2.73 ERA) and Fernando Rodney picked up his 9th save. Ramon Ortiz (1-2, 4.08 ERA) took the loss and the Blue Jays record drops to 18-27. The Rays are now 4-1 on their 6 game road trip and have 19 of their past 30 games. The Rays scored a pair of runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings including solo homers by Kelly Johnson and Desmond Jennings in staking Alex Cobb to an early 4 -0 lead. Cobb’s only mistake of the evening came in the fifth inning when he allowed a solo homer to Colby Rasmus . At 107 pitches on the evening and after an Evan Longoria error put a man at 2nd with 1-out in the 7th Cobb was replaced by Jake McGee who retired both hitters he faced to end the threat. Despite 10 hits the Rays offense was unable to sustain a large inning as they grounded into four double plays on the night. Ben Zobrist in the 1st, Evan Longoria in the 5th, Kelly Johnson in the 6th, and Desmond Jennings in the 7th. The failure to add on runs against the Blue Jays bullpen nearly cost the Rays as the Blue Jays mounted a pair of late rallies. Tonight was Joel Peralta ‘s turn to have a rocky outing as he came on to work the 8th inning with the Rays holding a 4-1 lead. Munenori Kawasaki started the inning with a single and Melky Cabrera followed with a walk to bring Jose Bautista to the plate representing the tying run. Year after year they pump out young pitching prospects who come in and throw gas with ease. With David Price struggling and injured and Jeremy Hellickson struggling, Matt Moore has stepped up to become the ace of the staff. You can now add Alex Cobb to that list of those picking up the slack. Cobb was impressive again tonight in his start against the Boston Red Sox . The line: 6.1 innings, three hits, one earned run, two walks and six strikeouts. Cobb, who grew up in Boston, has enjoyed some success against his hometown team in his career. He is now 2-2 with a 2.79 ERA in five lifetime starts against the Sox. On this night, Cobb was able to hold the Red Sox to just three hits: singles by Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz and a double by Shane Victorino . Cobb’s impressive performance was ruined by closer Fernando Rodney . After Desmond Jennings delivered the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single, Rodney entered the ninth inning with a 3-1 lead. He proceeded to walk three batters and struck out two before giving up a go-ahead bases clearing double to Will Middlebrooks. This was Rodney’s third blown save of the season and his ERA now sits at 5.28. He enjoyed his best season of his career last year with 48 saves and a ridiculous 0.60 ERA. What has changed? Simply; Rodney’s command. He walked 15 guys in 74.2 innings ...

Doubront, who has struggled in the early going of 2013, hasn’t appeared in a game since May 8 and hasn’t made a start since May 3. The lefty was briefly taken out of the rotation in favor of Allen Webster but ended up relieving Webster in his start last week, taking over with two outs in the second inning and going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs in his first appearance out of the bullpen since Sept. 25, 2011. The Sox opted to push Doubront’s next start back a few days after the relief appearance; he would have been slated to go on Tuesday if the rotation had stayed the same. In seven career games (four starts) against the Rays, Doubront owns a 3.91 ERA and a 2-1 record in 16 2/3 innings pitched. Tampa Bay hitters have hit Doubront at a .250 clip over the course of his career, but many current members of the Rays lineup have had success in limited plate appearance against the Sox left-hander. Seven of 12 Rays position players are hitting .333 or better against Doubront in their careers. The 25-year-old Doubront had a decent month of April, going 3-0 with a 4.24 ERA, allowing either two or three earned runs in all four of his starts. But his last two appearances have ballooned his season ERA to 6.40, thanks to 12 runs and 23 hits allowed ...

Source: www.padreshomeplate.com --- Saturday, May 11, 2013
The latest episode of “Weird Baseball” takes us to Tropicana Field, where the Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb pulled off one of the more unusual pitching feats you’ll see by striking out four San Diego Padres batters in the third inning of Friday night’s series opener. I say unusual, because it’s not necessarily rare. In fact, the last time a Rays pitcher pulled it off was Aug. 25, 2011, when Jeremy Hellickson did it against the Detroit Tigers. Tony Cingrani of the Cincinnati Reds also turned the trick back on April 28, so we’ve seen it happen with some degree of frequency lately, but certainly not in the manner Cobb did it. Here’s what makes it different and historic: Cobb only faced four batters in the inning — Will Venable, Chase Headley, Carlos Quentin and Yonder Alonso — and struck them out in order. That achievement is not a first, either. However, the fact that Cobb still managed to allow a run in the inning is something that has not happened in baseball since at least 1916, which is when gamelogs were first kept. As Matt Snyder of Eye on Baseball points out , there have been several occurrences in which one (all four batters in an inning strikeout) or the other (pitcher allows run in same inning as four strikeouts) have happened, but never have they occurred in the same inning. And that’s not a bit surprising considering all of the craziness that had to take place for it to happen on Friday. View full post on Yahoo! Spor ...

Ben Zobrist and Ryan Roberts each provided two-run singles in the frame. Fill-in leadoff hitter, Matt Joyce, and Evan Longoria each contributed two hits on the evening as well. Josh Lueke , Jake McGee , Joel Peralta , and Fernando Rodney combined to shutout San Diego in their relief efforts. That all seems normal enough. Meanwhile, Alex Cobb ‘s start was anything but normal. Cobb, not known for strikeouts, became the first pitcher in Major League Baseball history to record 13 strikeouts – a career-high – in fewer than five innings. He also became the first pitcher in Rays’ history to record nine punchouts in his first three innings of work. His line final line included: 4 2/3 innings pitched, five hits, three runs, two walks, two home runs, a hit batter, a balk, a wild pitch, and 13 strikeouts. Unfortunately, Cobb’s pitch count got the best of him. He was removed after 117 pitches, marking the first time a Tampa Bay starter has failed to complete at least five innings in a start this season. “[Taking him out] was just a matter of what you think is the right thing to do in that moment” said Rays’ manager Joe Maddon . “To have him injure himself because he’s going to throw 125 pitches in five innings, that’d be on me, so you have to be careful.” “His career is way too important to him and his family and to us, so that was it.” Maddon also us ...

Tonight we got just that. Alex Cobb doesn't strike many guys out. He's not on a Wade Davis level, but he's not Justin Verlander either.. His career K/9 is 6.86. In his start against the Padres it was 25.07. That's not a typo. He faced 23 batters, struck out 13 and got another two to ground out. Let's take a look at some amazing feats he accomplished tonight. -He got as many outs on balls in play as Jake McGee did in his one inning of work. -He became the first pitcher in MLB history to strike out 13 while working less than five innings. -He became the first pitcher in at least 100 years to face four batters in an inning, strikeout all four and still allow a run. -Struck out 56.5% of the batters he faced. -Induced 23 swinging strikes...21 on the changeup. In fact, he threw only 42 changeups, meaning ~43% were swung at and missed. Take a look at the strikezone plot of his at bat results: via www.brooksbaseball.net Cobb's outing broke the Rays streak of a starting pitcher working at least five innings. They'd done so in 34 consecutive games, the second longest streak to start a season since 1916. He wasn't able to finish five innings thanks to throwing 117 pitches -- 33 in the first. The Rays offense stayed on it's torrid pace, plating six runs and collecting eight hits. In their last 22 games, ...
