The first thing I said to Rooney Mara was so wrong, it turned out right. It’s the Sunday midpoint of the Cannes Film Festival, and I’ve just sat down in a subdivided hotel ballroom across from Mara and Casey Affleck, costars of Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, the moody, Malick-esque criminal lovers odyssey from young American writer-director David Lowery. Debuting at Sundance this year, and coming away with two awards to its name, David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints has been on our must-watch list for some time now. Led by Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster, the film earned very promising early praise coming out of Utah in January, and is receiving a special critics’ screening at Cannes this month. And with its August release date not far off on the horizon, the first clip has debuted over on EW , giving us a look at an interaction between Affleck and Mara’s characters. Bob Muldoon and Ruth Guthrie, an impassioned young outlaw couple on an extended crime spree, are finally apprehended by lawmen after a shootout in the Texas hills. Although Ruth wounds a local officer, Bob takes the blame. But four years later, Bob escapes from prison and sets out to find Ruth and their daughter, born during his incarceration. The barren landscapes of David Lowery’s poetic feature evoke the mythology of westerns and saturate the dramatic space with fatalism and an aching sense of loss. Aided by powerfully restrained performances by Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster, Lowery incorporates an unnerving tension into the film, teetering it at the edge of violence. Nate Parker and Keith Carradine complete the cast alongside Affleck, Mara, and Foster, with David Lowery directing from his own script. Anyway, tonight might've been Saturday Night Live's way of getting some old blood out of the way in favor of the new. Not that it was bad blood, just blood that needed to move on. The series often goes through periods of quality-level fluxuation, and necessary change has been a long time coming. Saturday night's finale episode of SNL marked the changing of the guard. Many of the show's current stalwarts are taking their final bows in 8H - Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and (we're fairly certain) Jason Sudeikis - and to top it off, Seth Meyers is set to leave mid-season 39 for the Late Night desk. Actor, director, Oscar-winner…designer? Ben Affleck can add the latter to his growing list of epithets as he has designed a limited-edition shoe for TOMS. The colorful footwear supports his organization, the Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) . The 40-year-old star founded ECI in 2010 to help the people of the eastern Congo build up their community in order to flourish both economically and socially. Saturday Night Live Did you catch the season finale of SNL ? Ben Affleck was the host and he wanted to explain that awkward speech that he gave when he accepted the award for Argo as best picture at the Oscars. Jennifer Garner joined him on stage and they poked fun at that ‘marriage is work’ speech during the SNL monologue. Kanye West was the musical guest and his performance was very angry and very odd. He did a few new songs off his upcoming album Yeezus. First one was called Black Skinhead and he did his thing in front of a screen that said “Not For Sale”, which is the exact opposite philosophy of his in-laws, the Kar-cashians. They sell their lives just to get paid. Next, Kanye performed a song called New Slaves. Both the songs were racially charged and very angry. What’s got Yeezus so pissed these days? I’m guessing it’s prob Kim and their failed relationship that they haven’t fessed up to yet but then again, he could be putting on a bitter show to get everyone talking about his new album. And finally, Stefon ( Bill Hader ) had a big send off! He got into a little tiff with Seth Meyers during the Weekend Update and announced that he was taking off to marry another man. If it were any Saturday Night Live episode other than the season finale, during which we would say goodbye to Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and possibly Jason Sudeikis, the fact that Ben Affleck seemed way-way nervous and way-way bad at reading cue cards, especially for a fifth-timer, would have been much more distracting. But who cares! GOODBYE, STEFON! HELLO, AMY POEHLER! WHY SO SERIOUS, KANYE, JUST KIDDING, PRETEND I DIDN’T ASK, YOU DO YOU! GOODBYE, IAN RUBBISH, I FEEL LIKE WE JUST MET! MUMBLE MUMBLE JASON SUDEIKIS MUMBLE! The evening was packed with ways to distract us from Affleck’s mediocre performance and sprinkled with sketches that would have been enjoyable even if it weren’t such a big night. Hader and Armisen’s sendoffs weren’t quite as plainly emotional as Kristen Wiig’s at the end of last season, but each were better for it — Hader’s seeing Stefon end up with his one true love, and Armisen’s seeing Armisen continue to half-live out his dream of being a musician through sketches.
