Sokolowski – USA TODAY Sports Tuukka Rask may have been snubbed for the Vezina Trophy, and there’s something to be said about Zdeno Chara possibly being snubbed for the Norris, but two recent crops of NHL Awards nominees have shown some respect to the Boston Bruins . Of the two nominations, one of them seems like a surer bet to possibly win it, although the other involves the Masterton Trophy and is a strong contender as well. Let’s start with the Masterton, actually. Adam McQuaid has been named a finalist, alongside Sidney Crosby and Josh Harding . Of the three, I fully expect Harding to win–multiple sclerosis is rough and could adversely affect his quality of life in the future, let alone now–and sort of don’t understand why Crosby is there , but the reason McQuaid was nominated is really serious and really scary. In fact, “Darth Quaider” could have died. During the lockout, McQuaid learned that he was suffering from a condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. In layman’s terms, it means a lot of dangerous blood clots were forming, including one that made his right arm swell. He actually needed two surgeries to treat the condition and one involved having one of his ribs removed and some of the muscle in his neck taken out too. (Yes, Adam gave up a rib so that he could live and play. It’s nearly biblical.) Following his procedures, he needed lots of rest. He coul ...

Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid has been named as one of three finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, as selected by the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association (PHWA). The Masterton Trophy is given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The other finalists are Minnesota Wild goalie Josh Harding and Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby. McQuaid underwent surgery in early October for thoracic outlet syndrome after a blood clot developed under his collarbone. His right arm "blew up" following a skating session at Harvard back in mid-September after the NHL's collective bargaining agreement expired. McQuaid needed two significant surgeries at Massachusetts General Hospital - one to remove the blood clot and another to prevent the condition from developing again. If there wasn't a lockout, he wouldn't have been ready for the start of the season. At the time it wasn't known whether he'd be ready to go once a new CBA deal was reached. Most athletes would miss an entire season to recover. "It was a scary thing he went through," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said at a press conference Tuesday. "I don’t know if he's told you, but the size of his arm, the swelling, it swelled up five, six times the size of his arm. He was ...

The award is presented to "the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey." Crosby returned to form this year after missing extended time with concussion issues the past two seasons. The Penguins captain finished fourth in the NHL with 56 points despite missing 12 games because of injuries, including a broken jaw he suffered when hit in the face with a puck on March 30. Harding was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last fall and missed 33 games as he underwent treatment. On April 22, he was activated from injured reserve and returned to the Wild lineup. McQuaid suffered a season-threatening injury in September when he was diagnosed with a condition causing dangerous blood clots to form in his body. After undergoing two emergency operation to remove the clots, the defenseman dedicated himself to his recovery and was in the lineup when the Bruins opened the season against the Rangers in January. A $2,500 grant from the Professional Hockey Writers' Association is awarded annually to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund in the name of the winner, who will be announced during the 2013 Stanley Cup final. ...

The honor is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. In addition to the trophy, a $2,500 grant award is given to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund in the name of that year's winner. Adam McQuaid of the Boston Bruins , Josh Harding of the Minnesota Wild and Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins were voted as the three finalists for this year's award. Crosby has battled injury for much of the last three seasons. Prior to 2013, the Penguins captain had missed a considerable amount of the previous two seasons due to concussion issues. During the course of this season, he missed all of April after sustaining a fractured jaw at the end of March. Despite missing the end of the campaign, he finished tied with Alex Ovechkin for the third most points (56) amongst any other player (four points off the league lead). In 36 games, Crosby registered 15 goals and 41 assists. Harding was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in November of 2012, which is an incurable autoimmune disease where the body randomly attacks its protective lining of nerves, causing them to scar. Side effects include balance issues, blurred vision and fatigue, which of course makes performing as a professional goaltender difficult. Hardi ...

One name that doesn't necessarily spring to mind straight away is that of Adam McQuaid, who was second on the team in fights last season if you can believe that. But there's a pretty good reason for that: Adam McQuaid is one of the biggest no-neck punks in the league. Most people probably don't notice it because of all the other dirty stuff the Bruins do. And also because most of his dirtiest moves have come against the Ottawa Senators — a team no one cares about — like this knee-on-knee hit of Nick Foligno (for which he was fined $2,500), and taking Chris Neil and running him from behind , which everyone just kind of shrugged at because screw Chris Neil. But the event that really brought McQuaid's ludicrous, shameful on-ice behavior to everyone's attention was earlier this year when he and Shawn Thornton tried to fight Matt Hendricks. At the same time. Hendricks, not really a fighter himself, wisely shied away from fighting Thornton and instead turned his attentions to McQuaid largely because, after the Bruins thugs circled him like motorcycle toughs in a James Dean ripoff film from the mid-1950s, he saw that was his easiest way out. But that's McQuaid's Bruins career in a nutshell. He's a pretty bad defenseman (his corsi is typically among the worst on the Bruins despite the fact that he gets the e ...
