| I read your June 28 article regarding “Free tuition program ends with final degree” in dismay. Ten percent of the students in this program did not graduate from high school, while 40 percent received a high school diploma, and 50 percent graduated from college to the tune of $500,000 per student. How is that a success story? Were these students tracked while attending public schools? A student attending a private school pays on average $10,000 per year, leaving the entire education cost for grades one through 12 at a mere $120,000. Four years of college, on the higher side, averages $150,000 for four years for a total educational cost of $270,000; $35 million could have provided one heck of an education for more than 69 individuals if utilized properly and perhaps with better results. Mr. (George) Weiss and his money could have provided 700 low-income children the ability to attend state college or 250 low-income children to attend the best colleges in the country.
