Today, live recordings are about as common as vocal tracks that have not been auto-tuned . So it's been great to find Wolfgang's Vault , a site that offers free streaming audio (downloadable for a fee) of rock, pop, blues, jazz and country concerts from a dizzying array of artists. The audio quality ranges from acceptable to outstanding, and the shows--some longer than two hours--often demonstrate of-the-moment musicianship, which seems to be a dying art these days. The Wolfgang for whom the vault is named was legendary rock promoter Bill Graham (Wolfgang Grajonca was his birth name). Graham ran venues such as San Francisco's Winterland and Fillmore (plus New York's Fillmore East and others), and dominated concert promotion until his death in a helicopter crash in 1991. Many of the recordings come from performances at his venues, but others come from radio performances for the King Biscuit Flower Hour shows. The list of artists is staggering: Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin on its first U.S. tour, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, the Who, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, the Clash... There really are way too many to list. You'll find a similar roster on the country side--Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, Bill Monroe, Dwight Yoakam, and many more. New concerts are added regularly.
