Microsoft released a beta heavens-viewing application yesterday called Worldwide Telescope . It's so nice, apparently, that even some astronomers are playing with it.
“Exploring the virtual universe is incredibly smooth and seamless like
a top-of-the-line computer game, but also the science is correct,” Alexander Szalay, a professor of astronomy and physics at Johns
Hopkins, told the New York Times .
Our own Scott Gilbertson called the imagery "stunning." By some accounts, it's even better than the competition, Google Sky .
But I wouldn't know because Microsoft only released its virtual 'scope for the PC. Us poor Mac users got left in that strange white room with our snarky advertising avatar .
I called up Microsoft's press person to beg and plead for a Mac version, but sadly, Julie Woodbury of
Waggener Edstrom Worldwide could only say: We're focused on optimizing it for Windows and there are no announced plans for the Mac OS. Dang! Although she did say it would run with BaseCamp. Anyone tried that yet?
