  If you ’ ve been wondering why there are four steel Ys dotting a few parks around town, you ’ re not alone. “ If it ’ s a hidden meaning, it ’ s hidden, ” said a confused Marion Figueiredo of Windsor Street. “ If they have to be explained, they shouldn ’ t be up. ” But artist Ralph Brancaccio, who was commissioned by the Cambridge Arts Council to construct the four 10-foot-high letters, has the explanation. Cambridge is the third city to host Brancaccio ’ s public art project, which features the four Y statues, in addition to community forums and a teen media program based on public reactions to the installment. Brancaccio began the Y project in New York City in 1998 and also set up Ys in Providence, R.I. He hopes to expand the project to 30 Ys and then photograph them in the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, he said. Each Y asks a different question — Y Discriminate, Y AIDS, Y Care and Y Think — in Donnelly Field, Clement Morgan Park, Sennott Park and Corporal Burns Park. “ I ’ m asking the community to pay more attention and put more energy into caring, ” Brancaccio said. “ I ’ m just trying to ask people to ask themselves what role they play in society that prevents them from changing. ” The arts council funded $2,250 of the $21,000 project, and the rest of the money has come from fundraisers and profits from his other artwork, Brancaccio said. “ You take risks when you believe in something. ” Despite the simplicity of the two-worded ...
