A heart-stopping ride by the name of Sure Shot that drops brave souls from 90 feet in the air before coming to a gentle halt, nonstop helicopter tours over the fairgrounds, and even “Two Tickets to Paradise” singin’ Eddie Money is here. Today’s high was 79 degrees and tomorrow's high will be 85 degrees, according to AccuWeather. Bean anticipates the fair will set a record with more than 220,000 people going through the gate due to the ideal weather and the fact that many people are staying closer to home this year because of the economy. “I think people aren’t taking their vacations this year,” he said, “and they’re spending the whole day here, even a couple of days.” Denny Johnson, 35, of Rockford treated himself and his three children — Tylor, 15, Autumn, 10, and Dillon, 11 — to a helicopter ride in a doorless Hiller B-4. “That was so scary. When we were going sideways, it felt like we were going to fall right out,” Dillon said. “Can we go again?” Tylor said, “We’ve gotta get one.” The record attendance could translate into gross receipts of $300,000. The net profits will be reinvested into next year’s fair, Bean said. The event, the year’s final area county fair, continues through Sunday. Visit winnebagocountyfair.com for a complete sc ... |
