Ten local youngsters from six families benefited from Wal-Mart’s Back to School shopping spree last week. The children, from age 4 to 13, were escorted through the store by Wal-Mart Associates, selecting shoes and clothing for the new school year. “New clothes and shoes make those first days of school fun and exciting for children, who otherwise wouldn’t have these things,” said Envoy Donna Griffin of the Salvation Army. “They can face a new class without worrying about fitting in. We are so blessed to have this opportunity for our children and so thankful to Wal-Mart for making it possible.” Wal-Mart applies for grant funds to cover the cost of outfitting the young students. Each of the 10 children is allotted $100 to spend on shoes, undergarments, and school clothes, and each one is assisted by a Wal-Mart Associate in choosing articles that are appropriate and economical. Along with this bounty, each student is supplied with a new backpack and school supplies. “We gave out 160 backpacks and had another 45 children on a waiting list,” Griffin said. “I didn’t know how we were going to be able to do any more, but a generous woman called and donated $1,000 for school supplies. So, I just purchased another 75 backpacks. It’s the great folks in this community who make it possible for us to do what we do.”   ...
