As Juke Van Oss hosts WHTC-AM 1450’s “Talk of the Town” on Friday — as he has for 47 years — a listener calls in with a request unheard of on many other frequencies. The on-air caller wants to return a missing driver’s license to its rightful owner. For 60 years, WHTC in Holland has kept its focus grounded in the community. “It’s good because there are a lot of stations today that are almost automated,” Van Oss said. “This is a station where you can call in with a lost dog or a lost cat — it’s a personal touch.” WHTC signed onto the airwaves 60 years ago on July 31, 1948. To recognize the milestone, WHTC will incorporate its celebration with the 50th annual Ottawa County Fair by broadcasting live and on-location in front of the grandstand. Program Director Brent Alan said he will play vintage WHTC moments. “One flashback is to an old Family Fare commercial and a snippet of one of our past (company) presidents,” Alan said. “I have some snippets of him on a Caribbean cruise when he called in on a ship-to-shore radio.” Alan said he enjoys being a part of the historic station. “It’s a real privilege,” he said. “I feel we’re the keepers of the history of the station.” Alan and General Sales Manager Kevin Oswald said the business model that has successfully endured 60 years involves dedication to the Holland area.
