The death of 25-year-old Ashlee Raymond may be accidental, state police said Tuesday, as their investigation enters its second month. A passing motorist found the 2001 Griswold High School graduate severely injured the evening of July 9 in the middle of the Shetucket Turnpike in Voluntown. Raymond later died at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich. State Police Lt. L.J. Fusaro, commander of the Eastern District Major Crime Squad, said the investigation remains open, but state police are leaning toward declaring it an accident since “there appears to be no criminal aspect at this time.” He declined to discuss further details of the case. Police have acknowledged forensic evidence was gathered and numerous interviews were performed. The state medical examiner ruled Raymond’s death was caused by blunt traumatic head injury. Raymond’s mother, Celeste Raymond of Voluntown, said her daughter’s injuries were consistent with a fall from a moving vehicle. The remaining question is whether her daughter’s fall was accidental, she said. The medical examiner’s office left the final determination with police. “If they say it was a terrible accident, it was one terrible accident,” Celeste Raymond said. “We’re clinging together as a family. That’s the way we’re handling it — trying to be as strong as we can.” Celeste Raymond said police have kept the family informed about the investigation.
