When Calkins Road Middle School students arrived for the first day of school Wednesday morning, teachers directed them to the school’s auditorium. The students were excited to see their classmates again after summer vacation, exchanging high-fives and hugs. However, the students got more excited when they received a big surprise to kick-off the school year, as a knight in shining armor rode into the auditorium to help Principal Scott Reinhart knight the students. The Calkins Road mascot is the Midknights, since the school feeds into Pittsford Sutherland High School, home of the Knights. At the start of the assembly, students watched a video tying the school into the theme of “Once Upon A Time in Pittsford.” After the movie, the projection screen was raised to reveal a castle backdrop and the knight and his horse walked to the center of the stage. Students screamed and cheered when they saw the unusual sight in their auditorium. Reinhart took the sword from the knight and knighted the 2008-09 class. “I wanted to send you out on the quest to make it a better world,” he said. Since its start two school years ago, the Calkins Road Middle School administration has always started school with an interesting way. The first year was the breaking of a bottle to kick-off school’s first year and last year was a song.
