Voters throughout the district chose Ken Donnelly as their Democratic candidate going into the Nov. race for state senate. As of press time, it was unclear whether Donnelly would face a write-in candidate from another party. “The people of this district know what the issues are,” he said to his supporters gathered at a packed hall Sons of Italy in Arlington. “Some may call it special interests, but I call it the people who educate our children … the people who care about women’s rights, it goes on and on.” But Donnelly said he was going to keep going and make his general election campaign a repudiation of ballot question number 1, which aims to eliminate the state income tax. Donnelly said he didn’t want to go to the State House in order to dismantle it. At almost 9:30 p.m. last night, Donnelly’s opponent, Jack Hurd, conceded. “We knew what we were up against, but, hey, look at this great team that’s come together,” Hurd said at his campaign party on Summer Street in Arlington. “I learned that the fundraising piece was the biggest difference,” Hurd said. “We knew it would be a challenge, it wasn’t a surprise, and it turns out it was the biggest difference.” Hurd’s term as an Arlington Selectman ends in April, and he said he would decide whether to run closer to that date.
