From Sam Stanton: A rash of political vandalism in the region is sparking a joint Democratic-Republican press conference today where political leaders plan to ask for a calming in the political wars. Numerous people have reported having political signs stolen, damaged or defaced in recent weeks, but the vandalism may have peaked in the Sacramento area over the weekend, when the chairman of the Sacramento Democratic Party had his garage door spray-painted with the slogan, "Obama's ship of fools." (right photo) Greg Larkins said he left his home in the north area Saturday morning and returned Sunday to find the vandalism. He had had an Obama sign in his front yard. He said he and county Republican Chairman Craig MacGlashan will hold a press conference this afternoon to denounce such incidents. Elections officials say they have gotten calls about varied acts of vandalism and sign theft, and in Del Norte County last week things got even worse: a bloody deerskin was stuffed through the mail slot of the Democratic Party headquarters in Crescent City, said Dan Ashburn, a 46-year-old volunteer at the office. "We just cleaned it up and went back to work ... ," Ashburn said. "It was a terrible waste of food, I'll tell you that." ...
