Thinking of becoming a mom? Then you may want to ask your doctor about planning for “preconception.” Many women do not understand the health complexities surrounding conception. Dr. Moira Cunningham, chief of internal medicine at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates’ Copley Square practice, routinely asks women of childbearing age at their annual physicals if they have thought about having children so she can address their questions and concerns. For women seeking pregnancy, she advises them to consider the following tips which could help promote a healthy pregnancy and baby: · Be clear about how to discontinue your present methods of birth control. Fertility returns immediately when a woman stops taking birth control pills. In fact, if a woman misses two or more pills in a pack, she is not protected against pregnancy. · · Review your medications, since many medications could cause harm to the fetus and may not be used during pregnancy. · Take a multivitamin that includes 400 micrograms (mg) of folic acid. It greatly reduces the risk of birth defects, such as spina bifida, and other neural tube defects. You can also enrich your diet with foods rich in folic acid: leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, and whole grains. · Be vaccinated for chicken pox if you haven’t already had it.
