An increasing number of trainee teachers are dropping out of the course before its completion, according to new figures. And overall, more than a quarter of trainees (28 per cent) decide not to pursue a teaching career. These statistics emerged in a study by Buckingham University academics Professor Alan Smithers and Dr Pamela Robinson. In their report, they suggested that the worst hit subjects are maths and modern languages. The academics suggested that students experience a 'culture shock' when they enter the classroom as a trainee, reports The Daily Telegraph. And the study also reveals that trainees in subjects such as classics, history and English are generally better qualified than those in maths, ICT and languages. This, Mr Smithers noted, could be a factor behind the drop out rates, with better qualified teachers more enthusiastic about their subject.
