First, Kyle Harper watched a two-stroke lead at the start of the day vanish. Then, in a three-way playoff with fellow Dighton-Rehoboth golfer Kyle Garcia and Bishop Feehan’s Dan Collins, Harper was stunned to see his friend Garcia four-putt to fall out of contention. Finally, after a close putt for par grazed the side of the cup, Harper watched Collins sink his par putt and claim the Division IV crown in the Taunton Junior City Open Tuesday at John F. Parker Municipal Golf Course. “To see my good friend struggle on the hole, it’s kind of hard to stomach it in the beginning,” Harper said. “To know I had two putts to win it didn’t really run through my head, I knew I had second place. Not that I wasn’t worried about making that putt, but first place was what I wanted and second place is the first runner up.” After shooting a tournament-low 72 on the first day, Harper was two strokes ahead of Garcia and five strokes in front of Collins who shot a 77. Harper’s 39 on the front nine widened the margin between Collins and Harper, who shot 40 and 42, respectively, but a sloppy back nine in which he shot 42 combined with a 36 from Collins and a 37 by Garcia closed the gap. “I played not to lose and that’s not the way to play,” Harper said. “You always hear it in college basketball or something like that, they always tell their players ‘Play to win.’ And that’s what you’ve got to do and that’s not what I did today. “I slept on it and it’s ...
