| A powerful thunderstorm produced large, damaging hail and numerous reports of funnel clouds as it plowed across at least five North Carolina counties in the foothills and Piedmont. No injuries were reported, but the storm left plenty of damage for auto insurance companies to deal with. All watches and warnings have ended for the immediate Charlotte area, although a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for much of the eastern half of North Carolina. Strong winds are still being reported across the western Carolinas, but those are not thunderstorm-related. They are being caused by the circulation around a powerful storm system centered in the Ohio Valley. A high wind warning is in effect tonight in the mountains, and a lake wind advisory is posted in the Piedmont. The thunderstorm responsible for today's problems formed about 3:30 p.m. in the mountains. Blair Holloway, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Greer, S.C., said it seemed to form along a warm front that had moved northward in the Carolinas during the day. For much of the day, the warm front was stalled on an east-west line across South Carolina. It began moving to the north, passing through the Charlotte area about 3 p.m. By 3:30 p.m., the front was stretched from Morganton, to Lincolnton, Mooresville and Albemarle.
