The Dover Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit is working to determine who broke into a local community center and stole computer equipment and band instruments. The break-in occurred some time between the evening hours of June 18 and the morning of June 19, at the Kirkwood Community Center, located at 54 S. Kirkwood St., said police spokesman Lt. James Hosfelt. The suspects took a personal computer tower, three flatscreen monitors and a printer, as well as a saxophone and bass guitar and amplifier, said Reuben Salters, director of the Inner City Cultural League. The ICCL was using the computers to give technology instruction to neighborhood children, Salters said, while the instruments were to be used by a band the ICCL is forming. The cost of the stolen items is about $4,300, Hosfelt said. The burglars also caused about $100 in damage to interior doors, he added. Salters said that despite the losses, the programs will go on. “No matter what happens, we’re moving forward,” Salters said. “We’re going to succeed.” There were no evident signs of a forced entry to the building, Salters said. “I’m really disappointed someone had so little regard for the children of this community that they would stoop to do this,” he added. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Unit at 736-7100. ...
