The boom heard ‘round Cherry Hill was more fizzle than explosion. A small explosion rocked parts of the Cherry Hill industrial park at approximately 9 a.m. this morning, June 27. The incident caused no injuries and no property damage. A Praxair truck delivering liquid hydrogen to a tank behind the CP Clare Corporation at 78 Cherry Hill Drive ruptured a sealing disc when pressure built up during the transfer. “The system over pressurized and the safety system kicked in,” said Hank Cote, facilities manager for the CP Clare Corp., which makes semiconductors. Several Clare employees reported seeing a flash of flame with the noise and Cote said this is the way the system is designed to work “The over-pressurized hydrogen flames off in a flash,” said Cote. “It did exactly what it was supposed to do.” “The immediate release of pressure sounded and felt like a small explosion,” said Capt. Peter O’Connor of the Beverly Fire Department. “Building occupants reported falling ceiling tiles and activated the fire alarm as a precautionary measure to evacuate the building.” There was, “no real emergency at the site,” O’Connor said. ...
