The Rocket Summer, Secret Handshake, Morning Light, and Phantom Planet at Metro Chicago, 6 p.m. September 25, 2008 The Rocket Summer is essentially one person, perky early-20s Texas songwriter Bryce Avary, who specializes in sugar-laced angst-pop delivered with the smiley cheer of a youth-group leader. Even his more emo-laced material seems puppyish, like the lost-love lament "Never Knew" from his second full-length, 2005's Hello, Good Friend . Avary plays here behind last year's Do You Feel on a headline tour supported by the decreasingly relevant Phantom Planet, a band once best known for singing the theme song for The O.C. , "California."
